The Old Station Nursery is committed to delivering high-quality childcare through recruiting, training and retaining the best staff. We are accredited with the Investors in People Standard and work hard to ensure our staff are given every opportunity to develop their careers.

Training opportunities

We offer the following courses to our staff

  • Location: Houlton Apprentice Nursery Practitioner

    Hours: 30 hours per week (12pm-6pm) over 5 days

    Start Date: As soon as possible

    Are you an enthusiastic person with excellent communication skills, who would like to start a career in Early Years education? We have a vacancy for an apprentice at our Houlton Preschool for someone who has a GCSE Grade A – C or 9 -4 in Maths and English, and a real passion to work with children. We can offer on-the-job training, so you can learn whilst earning a salary. Typical responsibilities whilst training will include:

    • Supporting children’s physical and emotional wellbeing in partnership with parents
    • Ensuring a clean and safe environment for children
    • Supporting children’s early education through play based activities.
    • Planning activities to extend children’s learning with regard to the EYFS.
    • Contributing to the observations of children’s development

  • Location: Henley Nursery Practitioner

    We have two positions available. One full time position and one part time position (20 hours Monday to Friday).

    Purpose of Post

    3) To provide a high quality, stimulating and inclusive learning environment.
    4) To ensure then that the elements of observation and assessment are implemented e.g. Starting with the child, observe (look, listen, note), plan (think and share), play and learn together, observe (look, listen, note).
    5) To support your Room Leader with any tasks delegated to you and with the overall running of the room.

    Qualifications: Level 3 or above
    Job Type: 40 hrs per week, all year round

    • To provide a high quality, stimulating and inclusive learning environment.
    • To supervise, lead, support and inspire your team members
    • To implement, monitor and review routines and procedures.
    • To co-ordinate and support their team in developing and delivering a range of activities for children in their care. This will include overseeing and contributing to planning for children’s interests and next steps to support progression.
    • To ensure then that the elements of observation and assessment are implemented e.g. Starting with the child, observe (look, listen, note), plan (think and share), play and learn together, observe (look, listen, note).
    • To support your Manager with any tasks delegated to you and with the overall running of the nursery.

  • Location: Gibson Rd, Innsworth Nursery Cook

    Job Title: Nursery Cook

    Job Type: 30 hours per week, 8am-2pm, Monday-Friday

    Reports to: Nursery Manager

    Department: Kitchen

    Purpose of Post
    To organise, cook and serve a healthy balanced diet for all children in the nursery, including those with special dietary needs.

    Key Areas
    1. Provision of food
    2. Maintenance of a clean, hygienic work area and storage.
    3. Planning and ordering of food in conjunction with nursery management, within budgetary constraints
    4. Involvement in preparation of nursery menu cycle, in conjunction with nursery management

    Required Skills and Personal Characteristics
    1. An ability to prioritise effectively
    2. Good time management
    3. A positive attitude and commitment to the role

    Half the time will be working 1:1 with a child with hearing needs and the other half will be working in the rooms. 

    Experience with Makaton would be preferred.
