Outdoor learning
Early start
The Old Station Nursery Filkins, nestled in the heart of Filkins village near Lechlade, provides exceptional childcare in a charming rural community setting.
Housed in the historic Old Village School, our nursery offers a nurturing environment for children aged two to five age. Situated at the heart of the local community, children enjoy frequent visits to St. Peter’s Church and the serene Filkins Park.
Outdoor play is central to our ethos, featuring weekly Forest School sessions where children explore nature, engage in activities like the mud kitchen, and care for animals such as chickens and guinea pigs.
This hands-on approach fosters curiosity and a deep connection with the natural world, encouraging exploration and learning as they grow. The children also have access to our vegetable patch, where they grow produce for their meals, and fruit trees that they pick from when ripe.
We prioritise each child’s individual needs, promoting social skills, creativity, and holistic growth through play-based learning. Our dedicated team at The Old Station Nursery Filkins ensures every child thrives in a safe, engaging, and inspiring environment. Our commitment to excellence is underscored by our Millie’s Mark award for paediatric first aid, guaranteeing high-quality care for your child.

The Brighter Learning Approach (BLA) is unique to The Old Station Nursery group and is our advanced approach to the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and core pedagogy. It differs from traditional nursery teaching methods by providing real-life opportunities to enhance children’s natural curiosity, with emphasis on hands-on experiences, child-led learning, and whole development.
The six core areas promote active engagement and critical thinking whilst encouraging exploration, creativity, and collaboration. Each child learns at their own pace and is challenged and extended at appropriate times.
The best place to see the BLA in action is via our local nursery Facebook page, where each post explains which part of the curriculum the children are working on. Our parents also receive updates on the Parent App too.

At our Filkins nursery, children enjoy a seamless blend of indoor and outdoor learning, taking full advantage of our outdoor spaces whenever possible. During a nursery tour, you’ll see first-hand how our environment fosters this fluid transition.
Additionally, we offer a variety of extra clubs throughout the week to enhance our Brighter Learning Approach, a customised adaptation of the Early Years Statutory Framework.
At our children’s nursery Budding Artists are encouraged to explore their creativity through activities such as painting, drawing, and crafts. With a host of resources available, children are encouraged to experiment with colours and textures, and create imaginative masterpieces that showcase their unique talents.
At The Old Station Nursery Filkins, children look after vegetable plots and are guided through growth cycles, discovering the different tastes and textures of fresh produce. As Budding Gardeners, children develop environmental awareness and lifelong skills in sustainable gardening, encouraging eco-friendly actions for a better future for our planet.
At Filkins nursery, our Budding Movers engage in activities that include dance, sports, and more. These lively experiences are loved by both children and staff alike, merging movement with structured learning to enhance coordination, confidence, and enjoyment in a home-from-home environment.
During their early years at Filkins Nursery, our Budding Scientists thrive on exploring the world around them. Children engage in hands-on experiments and explore a range of different materials and scientific resources such as test tubes and microscopes.
At The Old Station Nursery, we nurture Budding Chefs by teaching children basic cooking and food preparation skills. They engage in hands-on activities where they explore simple recipes, experiment with ingredients and develop cooking skills. Guided by the experienced and caring nursery team, our young chefs learn to appreciate healthy eating and gain confidence in their cooking skills.
At The Old Station Nursery, we foster musical exploration through our outdoor music area equipped with various instruments. Children discover the joys of music while experimenting with different sounds and rhythms, helping them to gain confidence in their musical abilities and creative expression.
At The Old Station Nursery, our Yoga Club offers a serene space where children explore yoga in a fun way. They learn poses and breathing techniques for relaxation and flexibility, as well as taking part in interactive sessions designed to enhance their strength, balance, and focus.
We are passionate about the link between home and nursery; the nursery experience is as much about the parent as it is for the child. The Old Station Nursery Filkins commits to verbally updating you about your child’s day at pick-up time and via digital updates on the parent app.
We are here at any time should you wish to call us or want to discuss any area of your child’s care. We aim to look after our parents as well as our children so you can continue with your day with a sense of peace.
First and foremost, you and we need to know that your child is safe. Before we can deliver the excellent curriculum that makes our nurseries so special, robust policies and procedures are followed to meet the exacting standards of Ofsted, building and fire regulations, food safety standards and staff DBS background checks and references.
Our staff are trained in numerous areas and we offer further training opportunities for staff who have an interest in a particular area. For example, some of our nurseries have attained Millie’s Mark, an accreditation gained by having 100% of staff on site trained in paediatric first aid.
At The Old Station Nursery Filkins, children are always well-nourished. We offer a selection of cereals for breakfast and a rolling morning snack, which is optional.
Parents are asked to provide a packed lunch for their child, featuring a variety of foods like sandwiches, casseroles, and pasta dishes (no nuts, please, as we are a nut-free nursery). In the afternoon, we serve a light tea with daily menus rotating on a three-week basis to ensure children enjoy a healthy, balanced diet.
Every child has a nursery key person who knows them best and who will be the child and parent’s main contact. Your key person at our nursery will update you about your child’s day and is there to answer your questions.
When your child moves to the next age group room, we hold several settling sessions with a new nursery key person. We encourage our parents to view the new room too, and we will work with you to discuss the new routines, just like we did when you first started nursery.
It is wonderful to nurture and see our children graduate to primary school. Part of the unique offering of The Old Station Nursery Filkins is our focus on the next stage of your child’s learning journey.
We prepare the children through school activities, teacher meet and greets and graduation ceremonies.
Our commitment is to support our parents too by providing updates on your child’s learning, planning parents evenings or one-to-ones and encouraging home link learning kits to enhance the link between nursery and home.
All our nurseries follow the Brighter Learning Approach, our bespoke version of the Early Years Statutory Framework. Within this, each nursery chooses extra clubs, activities, and enhancements suitable for their space.
The Old Station Nursery Filkins enjoys multiple clubs including Budding Gardeners, Budding Movers, Budding Scientists, Budding Chefs, Budding Musicians, Budding Artists and Yoga. We also hold open days where parents and carers are encouraged to come along and meet other parents to build their own personal friendships and networks ahead of primary school.
