The Brighter Learning Approach (BLA) is unique to The Old Station Nursery group and is our advanced approach to the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and core pedagogy. It differs from traditional nursery teaching methods by providing real-life opportunities to enhance children’s natural curiosity, with emphasis on hands-on experiences, child-led learning, and whole development.
The six core areas promote active engagement and critical thinking whilst encouraging exploration, creativity, and collaboration. Each child learns at their own pace and is challenged and extended at appropriate times.
The best place to see the BLA in action is via our local nursery Facebook page, where each post explains which part of the curriculum the children are working on. Our parents also receive updates on the Parent App too.
Championing children's holistic health and laying the foundations for a happy, healthy and successful life.

Children learn so much during their early years and take great joy in exploring the world around them.
At our nursery, children are immersed in the world of Science through age-appropriate hands-on experiments and activities designed to spark their curiosity.
Budding musicians can explore different instruments at our children’s nursery, as well as enjoy rhythmic games and participate in interactive sing-along sessions.
They’ll discover the joy of creating melodies, understanding beats, and expressing themselves through music.
Each activity is carefully crafted to inspire a love for music and develop their auditory skills in a fun and engaging environment.
At our children’s nursery our Budding Movers dive into a variety of activities including dance, sports, and beyond.
These engaging experiences are adored by both children and practitioners. They seamlessly integrate movement with structured learning to enhance coordination, build confidence, and foster a sense of joy at nursery.
Come rain or shine, we tend our vegetable plots, teaching the children about the different stages of growth cycles and exploring the different tastes and textures of the produce.
As Budding Gardeners, children learn about the environment and gain lifelong sustainable growing skills and enjoyment, which they will carry with them throughout their lives.
Our children love nothing more than when the team calls time for meal preparation or works with them during a baking morning or to produce a teatime dessert. The children learn so much from these activities, including measuring, counting, and following instructions.
At our children’s nursery Budding Artists are encouraged to explore their creativity through activities such as painting, drawing, and crafts.
With a host of resources available, children are encouraged to experiment with colours and textures, and create imaginative masterpieces that showcase their unique talents.
Wearing their gardening aprons and gloves our children learn about organic produce through cultivating and harvesting their own food.
We are partnered with SOIL Association and Food For Life, currently with a Bronze level which has been a significant first step towards improving our environment.
The children eat organic food at least once a day, often grown by themselves which gives their bodies a mind a healthy boost.
Our children thoroughly enjoy the cookery enhancements where they make and bake items in the Cool Touch oven.
The cookery lessons are designed to instill confidence in our little chefs while they learn lifetime skills such as measuring ingredients, following instructions, and communicating in the kitchen environment.
Age-appropriate language lessons, including baby-signing and language songs, stories, and books, are now featured on our timetable. These can also be shared with parents to continue the learning at home.
Our children leave for their next learning stage at primary school feeling confident about exploring languages and participating in class.
Stretching and bending are all part of the fun in Yoga class. On a warm day, we will lay out our yoga mats in the garden to connect with nature while attempting simple yoga poses. All the staff join in too much, to the children’s delight.
The Old Station Nursery Tressillian Road is in a fantastic location, close to Hilly Fields Park.
We regularly take walks to our park, exploring the sights and sounds of nature as we walk along, collecting natural materials to then get creative with in the afternoon.
Once a week the fab team from Shaker Kids come along to our nursery to deliver an exciting mix of P.E skills, exercise and dance, always with a mixture of high energy and enthusiasm which is always great fun.
Our nursery group is passionate about the link between home and nursery; the nursery experience is just as much about the parent as it is for the child.
The Old Station Nursery Tressillian Road commits to verbally updating you about your child’s day at pick-up time and also via digital updates on the parent App.
We are here at any time should you wish to call us or want to discuss any area of your child’s care. Our aim is to look after our parents as well as our children, so you can carry on with your day, work and career with a sense of peace.
First and foremost, you and we need to know that your child is safe. Nutritious hot meals are prepared on-site at The Old Station Nursery Tressillian Road by our cook and menus are rotated every three weeks.
As an organic nursery our promise is that your child will have at least one organic meal a day and the produce is often grown by the children themselves.
Every child has a nursery key person who knows them best and who will be the child and parent’s main contact. Your key person at our nursery will update you about your child’s day and is there to answer your questions.
When your child moves to the next age group room, we hold several settling sessions with a new nursery key person.
We encourage our parents to view the new room too and we will work with you to discuss the new routines, just like we did when you first started nursery.
It is wonderful to nurture and see our children graduate to primary school. Part of the unique offering of The Old Station Nursery Tressillian Road is our focus on the next stage of your child’s learning journey.

The team here creates a home-from-home environment, following routines that you have set at home to help your baby settle. Activities are planned to support your little ones in developing their sense of curiosity and social skills.
When the babies are ready, they progress to Baby Room 2, another bright space where they can move freely from activity to activity, encouraging independence and making personal choices.
The dedicated team provides a range of natural and stimulating resources, engaging them in activities such as messy play, painting, and texture exploration.
Toddlers is another bright space where toddlers explore the different activities that the team has planned for them. Here, the children are encouraged to use their voices and develop their own personal interests.
The toddler rooms offer great opportunities to explore colours, shapes, books, music, and dance through a well-balanced curriculum that emphasises the child’s individual needs.
As they progress into Toddler room 2, we support the children in building their self-confidence, expressing their feelings, developing their social skills, and becoming aware of other children.
Pre-school is a new, open-plan space where the children can freely learn in a more structured environment. We support the children by talking about what we are playing with and encouraging the expression of feelings.
The children learn to share and treat everyone with respect, care, and compassion, as well as life skills that increase their independence and readiness for school.
“At Tressillian Road we are delighted with our wonderful, new environment, resources and enhancements. Every day we create exciting and fun activities prioritising children interests and needs so that we can best support their development and support them on their learning journey to school.”
