Outdoor learning
At Sandhills Barnt Green, we believe in fostering your child’s growth, exploration, and confidence.
Nestled in a converted house, Barnt Green nursery offers a cosy, home-like atmosphere. With five rooms light and spacious rooms and access to three outdoor spaces, children have ample room to learn and develop.
Our intimate size sets us apart and created our unique ethos. Each member of our nursery team knows every child and family by name, creating a warm, welcoming environment akin to a second family. At Barnt Green we also encourage children have the opportunity to interact across age groups, enhancing their social skills and building confidence.
At the heart of our nursery is a commitment to promoting healthy practices. Children engage in activities that support a healthy lifestyle, enjoy nutritious meals, and participate in regular exercise.
In our garden you’ll find the children’s favourite Barnt Green resident, our nursery rabbit Thumper. The children are always keen to play and learn with thumper and having him helps us develop a sense of responsibility and a knowledge of our environment.

The Brighter Learning Approach (BLA) is unique to The Old Station Nursery group and is our advanced approach to the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and core pedagogy. It differs from traditional nursery teaching methods by providing real-life opportunities to enhance children’s natural curiosity, with emphasis on hands-on experiences, child-led learning, and whole development.
The six core areas promote active engagement and critical thinking whilst encouraging exploration, creativity, and collaboration. Each child learns at their own pace and is challenged and extended at appropriate times.
The best place to see the BLA in action is via our local nursery Facebook page, where each post explains which part of the curriculum the children are working on. Our parents also receive updates on the Parent App too.
Championing children's holistic health and laying the foundations for a happy, healthy and successful life.
Helping the future generation of global citizens to understand the world they live in and to believe they can make a difference.
Enabling early experiences in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM). Nurturing our next generation of investigators, inventors and innovators.
Enticing children to develop a life-long love of books and reading through engaging and interactive storytelling experiences. Building strong literacy skills while sparking imagination and creativity.
Engaging children in meaningful mathematical learning. Developing knowledge, building skills and exploring concepts, through purposeful play and plenty of practice.
Developing confident communicators by engaging in quality conversations with children every day, in a language rich and communication friendly environment.
Our nursery holds a special place in the hearts of Barnt Green residents, where we embrace outdoor exploration as much as indoor activities – weather permitting of course.
We offer a variety of extra clubs that enrich our Brighter Learning Approach, our customized version of the Early Years Statutory Framework. External providers are also welcomed to lead specialised clubs, enhancing our curriculum even further.
On Tuesday mornings we welcome in Mini Athletics Redditch, Solihull, and Stratford-Upon-Avon, led by Steph, a former primary school teacher and Forest School leader. Steph and her team are dedicated to guiding the little ones through engaging sessions, helping them set new personal bests while learning the core principles of athletics.
Rhythm Time is held by an external team that come to our nursery and use music and dance as a way of developing children’s cognitive and physical attributes.
The award-winning classes bring smiles, noise and most importantly – they ensure the children get to express their excess energy!
At Barnt Green, our budding chefs eagerly participate in meal preparation and baking delicious teatime treats. These activities are not only enjoyable but also teach essential skills such as measuring, counting, and following instructions.
Our Budding Movers club offers developmental classes featuring musical instruments, sensory equipment, puppets, and dance. These activities promote coordination, creativity, and confidence among the children. Weather permitting, we love hosting dance club in our garden, where children enjoy using streamers, hopping across coloured disks, and jumping through hoops to music.
Come rain or shine, our budding gardeners at Barnt Green Nursery love caring for vegetable planters, learning about growth cycles, and exploring the tastes and textures of different produce. These activities foster environmental awareness and sustainable gardening skills that children will cherish for life.
At Barnt Green, young scientists dive into hands-on experiments exploring various materials and the world around them. From creating potions to engaging in space-themed projects, children enthusiastically bring home their creations to share with their families.
Budding Artists at Barnt Green is a highlight for children, with parents appreciating the creativity without the mess at home. These sessions feature a variety of materials like paint, flour, leaves, playdoh, lentils, shredded paper, and glue, encouraging artistic exploration and fine motor skill development. Our nursery supports messy play and ensures everything is tidy before lunchtime.
Our nursery group is passionate about the link between home and nursery; the nursery experience is as much about the parent as it is for the child.
Sandhills Day Nursery Barnt Green commits to verbally updating you about your child’s day at pick-up time and via digital updates on the parent App.
We are here at any time should you wish to call us or want to discuss any area of your child’s care. We aim to look after our parents as well as our children so you can carry on with your day, work and career with a sense of peace.
First and foremost, you and we need to know that your child is safe. Before we can deliver the excellent curriculum that makes our nurseries so special, robust policies and procedures are followed to meet the exacting standards of Ofsted, building and fire regulations, food safety standards and staff DBS background checks and references.
Our staff are trained in numerous areas and we offer further training opportunities for staff who have an interest in a particular area.
For example, some of our nurseries have attained Millie’s Mark, an accreditation gained by having 100% of staff on site trained in paediatric first aid.
At Barnt Green, we take pride in our dedicated chef who prepares fresh meals daily for the children. Our menu includes breakfast, lunch, tea, and two healthy snacks, with milk provided at snack times and breakfast.
Our chef accommodates all allergies, intolerances, and parental preferences, ensuring every child’s dietary needs are carefully met. We follow a three-week rotating menu that changes with the seasons, offering meals that reflect the time of year.
During meal times, all staff members join the children for dining, creating a family-style experience that promotes community and togetherness. This shared mealtime not only enhances social interaction but also reinforces a sense of belonging among our nursery community and the older children are expected to self-serve and have more responsibility over meal times.
Every child has a nursery key person who knows them best and who will be the child and parent’s main contact. Your key person at our nursery will update you about your child’s day and is there to answer your questions. When your child moves to the next age group room, we hold several settling sessions with a new nursery key person.
We encourage our parents to view the new room too, and we will work with you to discuss the new routines, just like we did when you first started nursery.
It is wonderful to nurture and see our children graduate to primary school. Part of the unique offering of Barnt Green is our focus on the next stage of your child’s learning journey.
We prepare the children through school activities, teacher meet and greets and graduation ceremonies. Our commitment is to support our parents too by providing child learning journey updates, parents evenings or one-to-ones and home link learning kits to enhance the link between nursery and home.
All our nurseries follow the Brighter Learning Approach, our bespoke version of the Early Years Statutory Framework. Within this, each nursery chooses extra clubs, activities, and enhancements suitable for their space.
We offer flexible childcare with several session options as well as private, part-funded and some fully funded places for eligible families.

Babies and toddlers under 2 years old have their own safe and comfortable room where they can explore and develop without the hustle and bustle of older children. This space is equipped with soft play equipment, mirrors, musical instruments, and a variety of other toys and media to support their play and learning.
In the baby room, the routine is set by the babies themselves, ensuring the day revolves entirely around their needs. For nap times, we provide cots or bed mats and encourage parents to bring comfort items like blankets, teddies, or other cuddly friends to make sleep time as cozy as it is at home.
It’s common for parents supply formula milk for babies under 1 year old, including a tub of milk and labelled bottles, which are prepared, stored, and reheated in impeccably clean surroundings. Whenever possible, feeds are given by the baby’s key person. Once babies transition to cow’s milk, we provide the milk.
Once children are confident and physically ready, usually around 2 years old, they transition into the Toddler Room, where the day becomes slightly more structured. Here, the children enjoy a variety of activities, including painting, playing in sand and water, using playdough, and engaging in small world play and role play in their own ‘home corner.’
Mealtimes become more sociable as toddlers sit together with staff at the table, enjoying freshly prepared food in a family-style setting. Children are encouraged to eat using their knife and fork, promoting independence.
We embrace outdoor play in all weathers, allowing the children to have a good run around in the garden before lunch. This active time often leads to a restful nap before the afternoon’s activities begin. Sleep requirements vary at this age, so we have a designated ‘quiet time’ after lunch when sleep mats and blankets are provided for those who need a nap. Those who no longer nap can engage in quieter activities such as stories with their key person, puzzles, or playdough.
Once children turn 3, they transition into our pre-school room, where they have even more opportunities to learn through play and explore their interests. While we maintain a routine to provide structure and prepare them for school, our activities are as child-led as possible. We remain flexible, allowing the weather, children’s moods, interests, and current events to influence our daily activities.
Mealtimes continue to be sociable events, and children are encouraged to help with tasks like setting the table and serving, just as they would at home.
Throughout all age groups, we work towards the nationally approved 7 Early Learning Goals and ensure children progress confidently through the Early Years Foundation Stage. This approach guarantees that your child receives all the necessary preparation before moving on to school.
The new funding term is starting again in January and it’s important to understand the different kinds of funded childcare available to you and when you need to apply before the deadline closes on 30th November.
We have online experts who are on hand to answer any questions you may have via a web chat service, whether you’re a new or existing nursery parent.
