Outdoor learning
School-ready
Stowmarket Nursery and Pre-school are set across two sites, ensuring we can give children a truly unique and special nursery experience. Children start their journey at our Stowmarket Nursery and finish here at our Stowmarket Pre-school.
We are just a short walk from the nursery and offer the same home-from-home experience. The environment is carefully designed to prepare children to transition to their chosen primary school. Visit our nursery page here.
We have two large rooms and a sensory room, which offer a wide variety of different learning opportunities and experiences. Our spacious garden provides plenty of space to run off steam.
We enjoy practising balancing and climbing in a safe environment. Activities are set up to encourage exploration of the outdoor area, and there is also plenty of messy play, which is always a favourite with the children.
Our objective is to offer Stowmarket Pre-school children endless opportunities to further their knowledge and understanding of the world around them. Exploring the local community by enjoying walks to the church and library is an important part of this.
Our children also benefit from our membership at the East Anglian Life Museum, where they develop their learning further by exploring animals and steam engines and making dens in the woods.
Stowmarket Pre-school works closely with parents to ensure each child leaves the nursery confident and ready for the next stage of learning. We have established strong links with teachers from the local schools to ensure a smooth transition from Pre-school. We find this really helps the children and is an exciting part of the year as they prepare for the next stage in their learning journey.
We also support our families along the way with home learning resources widely used and enjoyed by both the children and their parents.

The Brighter Learning Approach (BLA) is unique to The Old Station Nursery group and is our advanced approach to the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and core pedagogy. It differs from traditional nursery teaching methods by providing real-life opportunities to enhance children’s natural curiosity, with emphasis on hands-on experiences, child-led learning, and whole development.
The six core areas promote active engagement and critical thinking whilst encouraging exploration, creativity, and collaboration. Each child learns at their own pace and is challenged and extended at appropriate times.
The best place to see the BLA in action is via our local nursery Facebook page, where each post explains which part of the curriculum the children are working on. Our parents also receive updates on the Parent App too.
Championing children's holistic health and laying the foundations for a happy, healthy and successful life.
Helping the future generation of global citizens to understand the world they live in and to believe they can make a difference.
Enabling early experiences in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM). Nurturing our next generation of investigators, inventors and innovators.
Enticing children to develop a life-long love of books and reading through engaging and interactive storytelling experiences. Building strong literacy skills while sparking imagination and creativity.
Engaging children in meaningful mathematical learning. Developing knowledge, building skills and exploring concepts, through purposeful play and plenty of practice.
Developing confident communicators by engaging in quality conversations with children every day, in a language rich and communication friendly environment.
Extra clubs here at Stowmarket Pre-school are based on our bespoke Brighter Learning Approach to the Early Years Statutory Framework, designed to prepare our children for school.
Come rain or shine, we tend our vegetable plots, teaching the children about the different stages of growth cycles and exploring the different tastes and textures of the produce.
As Budding gardeners, children learn about the environment and gain lifelong sustainable growing skills and enjoyment, which they will carry with them throughout their lives.
The children thoroughly enjoying using child-friendly equipment and assistance from the team to mix and bake biscuit and cake delights to be enjoyed at snack time or to be sent home for the family to enjoy.
These early measuring, weighing, combining and communication skills are an important part of the children’s early development.
The children at Stowmarket Pre-school are busy learning to communicate verbally and in written form. To enhance our language skills we also learn basic French words, which are learnt extremely easily by young ears who absorb the information like sponges.
Our aim is for our children to feel confident about exploring languages ready for participating in class at primary school.
Every day we get our bodies moving through dance, creative expression and sports activities.
The sporting activities, like learning to kick and catch a ball are similar to the way the children will enjoy these activities in P.E at school, getting them confident and ready to thrive in the lessons.
Creativity is at the heart of our day. When you come for a tour of the nursery you will often find us enjoying messy-play, creating wonderful works of art with all sorts of materials that we have found in the garden or recycled from packaging.
Stowmarket Pre-school children love nothing more than exploring music and musical instruments which are important for children’s cognitive development.
On a summer’s day you will often hear our musical melodies drifting out of the pre-school windows.
From learning about the effect of mixing different colours together to watching the effect of gravity, our Stowmarket Pre-school children are always busy exploring the world around them, learning to question and discuss theories.
Our nursery group is passionate about the link between home and nursery; the nursery experience is just as much about the parent as it is for the child.
Stowmarket Pre-school commits to verbally updating you about your child’s day at pick-up time and also via digital updates on the parent App.
We are here at any time should you wish to call us or want to discuss any area of your child’s care. Our aim is to look after our parents as well as our children, so you can carry on with your day, work and career with a sense of peace.
First and foremost, you and we need to know that your child is safe. Before we can deliver the excellent curriculum that makes our nurseries so special, robust policies and procedures are followed to meet the exacting standards of Ofsted, building and fire regulations, food safety standards and staff DBS background checks and references.
Our staff are trained in numerous areas and we offer further training opportunities for staff who have an interest in a particular area.
For example, some of our nurseries have attained Millie’s Mark, an accreditation gained by having 100% of staff on site trained in paediatric first aid.
Nutritious hot meals are prepared on-site at Stowmarket Pre-school by our cook. Good nutrition is essential during childhood as it is a time of rapid growth, development and activity.
Our chefs are trained using the Eatwell NHS guidelines to ensure mealtimes are delicious, packed with good things that enjoyable for children.
There are two main meals served per day and the children have healthy snacks such as fruit.
Every child has a nursery key person who knows them best and who will be the child and parent’s main contact. Your key person at our nursery will update you about your child’s day and is there to answer your questions.
When your child moves to the next age group room, we hold several settling sessions with a new nursery key person.
We encourage our parents to view the new room too and we will work with you to discuss the new routines, just like we did when you first started nursery.
It is wonderful to nurture and see our children graduate to primary school. Part of the unique offering of Stowmarket Pre-School is our focus on the next stage of your child’s learning journey.
We prepare the children through school activities, teacher meet and greets and graduation ceremonies.
Our commitment is to support our parents too by providing child learning journey updates, parents evenings or one-to-ones and home link learning kits to enhance the link between nursery and home.
All our nurseries follow the Brighter Learning Approach, our bespoke version of the Early Years Statutory Framework.
At Stowmarket Pre-School we concentrate our activities around preparing the children for the next stage in their learning journey in Reading, Maths, Science and the world around us.
Stowmarket Pre-school commits to providing a simple fee structure so you can manage your nursery costs.
Our pre-school in Rubery has the benefit of full day, half day and short-day sessions as well as a small number of term time only sessions. To support our community, we do not charge for additions such as food, enhancements or consumables and some fully funded and part-funded sessions are also available for eligible families.
Please contact us for the nursery fee that is correct for your individual circumstances.
In our toddler room, we focus on helping the children understand their emotions and how to negotiate situations with their peers, such as sharing.
We focus on the primary three areas of the curriculum and begin to work on the skills needed to move into pre-school. The children are encouraged to begin to become more independent.
The room is divided into three areas: the messy play and dining area, the small world play and home corner, and the cosy corner and sleep area.
The Toddler room is a fun, happy, and vibrant place where it is a pleasure to watch the children enjoy their day.
In pre-school, the children’s activities are based on their interests, and we extend that knowledge as much as possible.
The children here are becoming more independent by taking on everyday tasks such as self-serving their food, scraping their own plates and putting on their own coats and shoes to prepare them for primary school.
The children are encouraged to make their own choices throughout the day by voting for a story or an activity that they would like to do.
“At Stowmarket pre-school we pride ourselves on the relationships that we build with our children and families. We provide the best level of care that we possibly can to our children and unique learning opportunities daily. The curriculum is based around the children's interests, and it is a pleasure watching them learn and grow.”
