Outdoor learning
Good Manors Day Nursery Miller Drive, located in the heart of the Uplands community, provides stimulating activities that encourage learning and development.
The team at our Fareham nursery is encouraged to be the best that they can be. They are valued, included, and respected; this is how we welcome all families into the nursery. We invite you to book a tour of our Ofsted-rated ‘Good’ setting so that you can see first-hand how children are empowered to understand the world around them.
We believe that the most effective way for children to learn about nature, seasons, growth, and life cycles is through direct experience. That’s why we place a strong emphasis on outdoor learning at our nursery. Children can witness the changes that occur with each new season, and we participate in the Woodlands Trust Green Tree School Awards, which promotes outdoor learning for children to learn about trees, woods, and wildlife.
We may look small from the front of our building, but we are actually fortunate to have lots of lovely garden space, which is split into three areas with age-appropriate resources including a climbing frame, climbing wall, sand pit, mud kitchen and a playhouse. The garden also has a retractable awning, allowing safe, all-day access even in summer.
We have developed a wonderful growing area where children tend to fruit and vegetables, which are used for tasting, exploring and painting. The garden also provides a habitat for many living creatures, such as stag beetles, slow worms, caterpillars, and spiders, which enhances the children’s learning about the natural world.
In addition to garden exploration, we can often be seen at the park in our local Fareham community or taking the short bus journey into town to visit Fareham Library or the market. We also use the opportunity to take care of the environment during our adventures and discuss being a planet protector and taking care of our planet and wildlife whilst litter picking.

The Brighter Learning Approach (BLA) is unique to The Old Station Nursery group and is our advanced approach to the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and core pedagogy. It differs from traditional nursery teaching methods by providing real-life opportunities to enhance children’s natural curiosity, with emphasis on hands-on experiences, child-led learning, and whole development.
The six core areas promote active engagement and critical thinking whilst encouraging exploration, creativity, and collaboration. Each child learns at their own pace and is challenged and extended at appropriate times.
The best place to see the BLA in action is via our local nursery Facebook page, where each post explains which part of the curriculum the children are working on. Our parents also receive updates on the Parent App too.
Championing children's holistic health and laying the foundations for a happy, healthy and successful life.
Helping the future generation of global citizens to understand the world they live in and to believe they can make a difference.
Enabling early experiences in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM). Nurturing our next generation of investigators, inventors and innovators.
Enticing children to develop a life-long love of books and reading through engaging and interactive storytelling experiences. Building strong literacy skills while sparking imagination and creativity.
Engaging children in meaningful mathematical learning. Developing knowledge, building skills and exploring concepts, through purposeful play and plenty of practice.
Developing confident communicators by engaging in quality conversations with children every day, in a language rich and communication friendly environment.
At our nursery we hold numerous clubs that enhance the Brighter Learning Approach, our bespoke version of the Early Years Statutory Framework. We use our outside area to hold many of these activities.
At our children’s nursery Budding Artists are encouraged to explore their creativity through activities such as painting, drawing, and crafts. With a host of resources available, children are encouraged to experiment with colours and textures, and create imaginative masterpieces that showcase their unique talents.
Budding musicians can explore different instruments at our children’s nursery, as well as enjoying rhythmic games, and participating in interactive sing-along sessions. They’ll discover the joy of creating melodies, understanding beats, and expressing themselves through music. Each activity is carefully crafted to inspire a love for music and develop their auditory skills in a fun and engaging environment.
Babies and preschoolers at our Miller Drive nursery enjoy baking and sharing their creations with their families at home. Cooking provides a hands-on experience and evokes a positive connection with different foods. It also develops hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills, such as cutting for older children, a sense of independence, and early math skills, such as measurement. Themed events such as Easter, preparing hot cross buns, and Shrove Tuesday, making pancakes, are a highlight for the children, who join in singing nursery rhymes as they make their treats.
Plants, flowers, crops, and wildlife all benefit from our children tending to their environment at our Fareham nursery. Gardening is a fun and physical way of educating children about our natural world. They carefully sow seeds and take care of them until harvest time, when we talk about where supermarket ingredients come from and what they are used to make. The African snails that reside at our nursery also benefit from our crops and enjoy eating some of the ingredients children harvest from our garden.
Potion-making is a hit for our children, who enjoy using various resources, different shaped containers and potion cards, working together and communicating with descriptive language to create potions and share ideas in the early stages of science education.
Mathematics is introduced here by looking at numbers on scales and cylinders, counting pebbles being added, and determining how many drops of water are needed from pipettes.
Active and calmer movements are encouraged at our Fareham nursery, and we are proud to support mental health awareness through movement.
Yoga sessions involve group participation, promoting social interaction and communication skills. Engaging with peers in an encouraging environment enhances children’s emotional resilience and sense of belonging. Physical strength and balance increase as children learn to use their muscles in new ways and practice different poses.
We use our local open spaces to play ball games, which benefit children’s motor skills, hand-eye coordination, timing and social skills through turn-taking.
Our nursery group is passionate about the link between home and nursery; the nursery experience is as much about the parent as it is for the child. Good Manors Day Nursery Miller Drive commits to verbally updating you about your child’s day at pick-up time and via digital updates on the parent App.
We are here at any time should you wish to call us or want to discuss any area of your child’s care. We aim to look after our parents as well as our children so you can carry on with your day, work and career with a sense of peace.
First and foremost, you and we need to know that your child is safe. Before we can deliver the excellent curriculum that makes our nurseries so special, robust policies and procedures are followed to meet the exacting standards of Ofsted, building and fire regulations, food safety standards and staff DBS background checks and references.
Our staff are trained in numerous areas and we offer further training opportunities for staff who have an interest in a particular area. For example, some of our nurseries have attained Millie’s Mark, an accreditation gained by having 100% of staff on site trained in paediatric first aid.
All our meals are cooked on-site, catering to various dietary requirements. Our menu rotates every four weeks, and our chef provides nutritious hot meals that change with the seasons.
Healthy snacks, including fruit and vegetables, are provided throughout the day, and we are proud to maintain a 5-star food hygiene rating from the Food Standards Agency.
Every child has a nursery key person who knows them best and who will be the child and parent’s main contact. Your key person at our nursery will update you about your child’s day and is there to answer your questions.
When your child moves to the next age group room, we hold several settling sessions with a new nursery key person. We encourage our parents to view the new room too, and we will work with you to discuss the new routines, just like we did when you first started nursery.
It is wonderful to nurture and see our children graduate to primary school. Part of the unique offering of Good Manors Day Nursery Miller Drive is our focus on the next stage of your child’s learning journey.
We prepare the children through school activities, teacher meet and greets and graduation ceremonies. Our commitment is to support our parents too by providing child learning journey updates, parents evenings or one-to-ones and home link learning kits to enhance the link between nursery and home.
All our nurseries follow the Brighter Learning Approach, our bespoke version of the Early Years Statutory Framework. Within this, each nursery chooses extra clubs, activities, and enhancements suitable for their space.
Our Fareham nursery enjoys high-energy classes and slower activities such as Budding Gardeners and Chefs. We also hold open days where parents and carers are encouraged to come along and meet other parents to build their own personal friendships and networks ahead of primary school.
Good Manors Day Nursery Miller Drive offers flexible childcare with several session options as well as private, part-funded and some fully funded places for eligible families.

At our Fareham nursery, we support babies’ individual personalities and gently follow their at-home routines. Key carers are consistent and a familiar face for our babies, and we get to know them, working in partnership with their parents so they trust and feel reassured.
Babies enjoy indoor and outdoor activities such as cooking, painting, and trips out in our local community to the park and library, as well as visiting the ducks at our local park.
Our large, light-filled rooms are all on ground-floor level at our Fareham nursery. Children in our Tweenies room are active, inquisitive and rapidly developing language and cognitive skills. We provide new experiences to nurture their natural curiosity and help them develop a positive sense of self and respect for others.
During their time here, children gradually become more confident and independent and get used to sharing experiences together in a safe, secure, and caring environment. This is also the time when many children go through the toilet training process, and our staff are able to work with parents to make this transition as smooth as possible.
Preschoolers at Good Manors Day Nursery Miller Drive are offered experiences to enhance their development in all areas with our early years learning approach supporting them to prepare them for the next stage in their learning journey at school.
Children are encouraged to practice their self-help skills to support their independence and self-esteem. Creativity and imagination thrive here with role play and discussion.
Considering a nursery is a big decision for parents so we encourage all to come along to the Open Day to really get a feel for our setting. We have lots of activities and refreshments to keep everyone entertained. Parents can learn about the early years’ curriculum and our Brighter Learning Approach, and how we communicate about their child’s learning and progress, so they know what their children has learnt and enjoyed during the day.
“At Miller Drive, we balance child-initiated and adult-led activities. We plan according to each child's interests and needs and use the Statutory Framework Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and The Old Station Nursery’s Brighter Learning Approach as a holistic guide to learning. I am a passionate advocate for outdoor learning, so we aim to use our outdoor facilities and local area to benefit each child's development. We value our parents and work hard to build trusting relationships that enhance children's development and create an inclusive, family-friendly environment.”
