Our enriched curriculum embedded into every nursery

The All Aboard Approach is unique to The Old Station Nursery Group and is our advanced approach to the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and core pedagogy. It differs from traditional nursery teaching methods by providing real-life opportunities to enhance children’s natural curiosity, with emphasis on hands-on experiences, child-led learning, and whole development.

The six core areas promote active engagement and critical thinking whilst encouraging exploration, creativity, and collaboration. Each child learns at their own pace and is challenged and extended at appropriate times.

The best place to see the All Aboard Approach in action is via our local nursery Facebook page, where each post explains which part of the curriculum the children are working on. Our parents also receive updates on the Parent App too.

Enhancements at The Old Station Nursery Forest School Devizes

With such an expansive outdoor space at Devizes, our children delight in activities that take place out in the fresh air. Activities throughout the week enhance our All Aboard Approach, our bespoke version of the Early Years Statutory Framework and instil curiosity, creativity, and well-being to support readiness for school.

Forest School Enhancement

Our Forest School Enhancement gives the children regular opportunities to explore a natural environment through child-led discovery, supported risk-taking and practical experiences.

The dedicated Forest School area includes an open fire pit, woodworking shed, eco toilet, potting shed, allotments and resources for den building. The children can investigate natural materials, make things, grow plants, work together and test their own ideas.

These experiences help develop confidence, resilience, co-ordination, communication, problem-solving and respect for the natural world, while giving the children time to be curious and discover what they’re capable of.

Cooking at Devizes nursery

Using a ‘cool touch’ oven, child-safe equipment, chef’s hats and aprons, the children explore the joys of cooking. They learn practical skills such as measuring, counting, mixing, following instructions and talking about ingredients.

At Devizes, cookery also connects naturally with growing food, seasonal ingredients and understanding where food comes from.

Exploring music at Devizes nursery

Budding musicians can explore different instruments at our nursery in Devizes, as well as enjoying rhythmic games, and participating in interactive sing-along sessions.

They’ll discover the joy of creating melodies, understanding beats, and expressing themselves through music.

Each activity is carefully crafted to inspire a love for music and develop their auditory skills in a fun and engaging environment.

Discovering science at Devizes nursery

Children learn so much during their early years and take great joy in exploring the world around them.

At our nursery they’re immersed into the world of Science through age appropriate hands-on experiments and activities designed to spark their curiosity.

Encouraging creativity at Devizes nursery

Children at our Devizes nursery can explore daily arts and crafts. Messy activities help our babies learn about the world around them and explore different textures.

Children learn about different cultures and celebrate their festivals by making masks and costumes and developing fine motor skills.

Physical activities at Devizes nursery

Children grow in confidence week after week during our circus skills classes. An external instructor joins us to teach the children how to balance plates, practice hand-eye coordination, and confidently move around the room.

Allowing the children to participate in this activity in early childhood lays the foundations for a more active and healthy life through continued physical development.

Gardening at Devizes nursery

With allotments, planting areas and plenty of outdoor space, gardening is a natural part of life at Devizes. The children can sow seeds, care for plants, watch them change and learn that growing takes time and care.

Gardening brings together curiosity, responsibility, sustainability and hands-on learning, with plenty of opportunities to taste, smell, touch and notice the changing seasons.

Baby Rooms

There are two baby rooms at Devizes, creating cosy, nurturing spaces where the youngest children can settle and explore at their own pace.

We work closely with parents and carers to follow familiar routines from home. Singing, puppets, sensory experiences and free-flow exploration support early communication and discovery, while a separate sleep and relaxation room gives babies a calm place to rest.

There is also a sensory room for calm exploration, and as babies become more mobile they can discover resources including a crawl-in sandpit. Settling sessions are shaped around each child and family, helping the nursery begin to feel familiar before their first full day.

What's happening at Devizes

A Forest School nursery near Devizes

Forest School is one of the things that makes Devizes different. Our dedicated Forest School area gives the children time and space to learn through nature, movement, practical experiences and supported risk-taking.

The children can build dens, investigate natural materials, grow plants in our allotments and develop practical skills in the woodworking and potting areas. The space also includes an open fire pit and eco toilet, helping outdoor learning become a meaningful part of the day across the seasons.

Forest School isn’t about rushing towards a finished result. The children are encouraged to notice, wonder, try, solve problems and work together, building resilience and confidence through what they discover for themselves.

Woodland, meadow and our pygmy goats

Nature is all around the children at Devizes. Our woodland is full of seasonal changes to notice, while the meadow gives us space for active play, celebrations, sports days and time together outdoors.

Our pygmy goats are another much-loved part of nursery life. With the team beside them, the children can help feed and care for the goats, learning to be gentle, responsible and curious about animals and their needs.

Gardening is woven into the day too. The children plant, tend and watch things grow in our allotments and outdoor areas, building an early understanding of where food and flowers come from and how we can care for the world around us.

What our Devizes Nursery Manager says

“At Devizes, we want every child to feel welcome, known and excited to discover what comes next. Our outdoor space gives us so many opportunities to think differently, gently challenge the children and help them grow in confidence at their own pace. We’re proud of the experiences we can offer here, especially through Forest School, nature and caring for the world around us.”
