Outdoor learning
Our purpose-built Sixpenny Day Nursery at Roundway Hill Farm provides a stimulating learning environment for the children of the Devizes community. Bi-fold doors allow for free-flowing indoor and outdoor play and easy visibility of the wildlife in the acres of land around us, including rabbits and deer. The nursery also has a dedicated area for its own pygmy goats, where the children can excitedly feed and care for them.
The team is proud of our Ofsted-rated ‘Good’ Devizes nursery, which specialises in outdoor learning and adopts a ‘Forest School’ learning approach. We welcome parents to tour our setting to see how their children will benefit from our approach to early years education.
We use our expansive outdoor space in all weather. We have a large woodland area full of flowers and plants and an exciting mud kitchen, encouraging conversation about the environment and the importance of appreciating our planet. Our meadow is an excellent venue for scarecrow festivals, sports days, and open events for parents and our local community.
Outings take us to the local B&Q store, where children choose plants to return to the nursery to plant, tend, and grow. The Roundway White Horse on Roundway Hill is the perfect spot for investigating and a picnic.

The Brighter Learning Approach (BLA) is unique to The Old Station Nursery group and is our advanced approach to the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and core pedagogy. It differs from traditional nursery teaching methods by providing real-life opportunities to enhance children’s natural curiosity, with emphasis on hands-on experiences, child-led learning, and whole development.
The six core areas promote active engagement and critical thinking whilst encouraging exploration, creativity, and collaboration. Each child learns at their own pace and is challenged and extended at appropriate times.
The best place to see the BLA in action is via our local nursery Facebook page, where each post explains which part of the curriculum the children are working on. Our parents also receive updates on the Parent App too.
Championing children's holistic health and laying the foundations for a happy, healthy and successful life.
Helping the future generation of global citizens to understand the world they live in and to believe they can make a difference.
Enabling early experiences in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM). Nurturing our next generation of investigators, inventors and innovators.
Enticing children to develop a life-long love of books and reading through engaging and interactive storytelling experiences. Building strong literacy skills while sparking imagination and creativity.
Engaging children in meaningful mathematical learning. Developing knowledge, building skills and exploring concepts, through purposeful play and plenty of practice.
Developing confident communicators by engaging in quality conversations with children every day, in a language rich and communication friendly environment.
With such an expansive outdoor space at Sixpenny Day Nursery, our children delight in activities that take place out in the fresh air. Clubs throughout the week enhance our Brighter Learning Approach, our bespoke version of the Early Years Statutory Framework and instil curiosity, creativity, and well-being to support readiness for school.
Budding musicians can explore different instruments at our nursery in Devizes, as well as enjoying rhythmic games, and participating in interactive sing-along sessions.
They’ll discover the joy of creating melodies, understanding beats, and expressing themselves through music.
Each activity is carefully crafted to inspire a love for music and develop their auditory skills in a fun and engaging environment.
Our children love nothing more than when the team calls time for meal preparation or works with the children to produce a teatime dessert or baking morning.
The children learn so much in these activities including measuring, counting skills and following instructions.
Children learn so much during their early years and take great joy in exploring the world around them.
At our nursery they’re immersed into the world of Science through age appropriate hands-on experiments and activities designed to spark their curiosity.
Children at our Devizes nursery can explore daily arts and crafts. Messy activities help our babies learn about the world around them and explore different textures.
Children learn about different cultures and celebrate their festivals by making masks and costumes and developing fine motor skills.
Children grow in confidence week after week during our circus skills classes. An external instructor joins us to teach the children how to balance plates, practice hand-eye coordination, and confidently move around the room.
Allowing the children to participate in this activity in early childhood lays the foundations for a more active and healthy life through continued physical development.
We are fortunate to have such a vast outdoor space at our day nursery. We use creative ways to plant with recycled wildflower paper using shredded paper and a hand blender to mulch in water.
Children carefully follow instructions to carefully add mixed wildflower seeds to plant the paper and watch wild flowers grow.
Our nursery group is passionate about the link between home and nursery; the nursery experience is as much about the parent as it is for the child.
Sixpenny Day Nursery commits to verbally updating you about your child’s day at pick-up time and via digital updates on the parent App.
We are here at any time should you wish to call us or want to discuss any area of your child’s care. We aim to look after our parents as well as our children so you can carry on with your day, work and career with a sense of peace.
First and foremost, you and we need to know that your child is safe. Before we can deliver the excellent curriculum that makes our nurseries so special, robust policies and procedures are followed to meet the exacting standards of Ofsted, building and fire regulations, food safety standards and staff DBS background checks and references.
Our staff are trained in numerous areas and we offer further training opportunities for staff who have an interest in a particular area.
We have two chefs who prepare a varied and delicious menu on-site. Our menus are seasonal, and we try to use our home-grown vegetables wherever possible.
We cater to all food allergies and dietary requirements and ensure we are inclusive of all religions.
Every child has a nursery key person who knows them best and who will be the child and parent’s main contact. Your key person at our nursery will update you about your child’s day and is there to answer your questions.
When your child moves to the next age group room, we hold several settling sessions with a new nursery key person.
We encourage our parents to view the new room too, and we will work with you to discuss the new routines, just like we did when you first started nursery.
It is wonderful to nurture and see our children graduate to primary school. Part of the unique offering of Sixpenny Day Nursery is our focus on the next stage of your child’s learning journey.
We prepare the children through school activities, teacher meet and greets and graduation ceremonies. Our commitment is to support our parents too by providing child learning journey updates, parents evenings or one-to-ones and home link learning kits to enhance the link between nursery and home.
All our nurseries follow the Brighter Learning Approach to the Early Years Statutory Framework, our bespoke curriculum. Within this, each nursery chooses extra clubs, activities, and enhancements suitable for their space.
These activities benefit children by increasing their confidence and self-esteem through exploration and problem-solving. They also encourage them to learn how to assess and take appropriate risks depending on their environment.
We hold open days, where parents and carers are encouraged to come along and meet other parents to build their own personal friendships and networks ahead of primary school.
Sixpenny Day Nursery commits to providing a simple fee structure so you can manage your nursery costs.
At this nursery, we provide private and government-funded sessions for eligible parents. Contact us for the nursery fee that is correct for your individual circumstances.
Parents are encouraged to bring their babies for as many settling-in sessions as they wish before joining the nursery. When moving to a new room, our staff work together to ensure a detailed handover, ensuring the child and parent are comfortable before transition.
There are two baby rooms at our Devizes nursery, where we follow routines from home to meet each child’s individual needs in a cosy atmosphere. We use singing and puppets to encourage early language development, and we have a crawl-in sandpit and resources for free-flow exploration once babies become mobile. There is also a separate room for babies to relax and sleep and a sensory room to discover and explore.
Sixpenny Day Nursery has two toddler rooms, where activities continue to develop sensory play. Independence and friendships begin to form here, and we support our children in being aware of their surroundings. Children build their social skills and learn to manage their emotions through group and free-flowing activities that consider children’s individual interests. We have quiet areas for resting and reading stories independently or as a group activity.
When the time comes for toilet training, we are led by parents and children to support the process, taking into account their preferences and keeping open lines of communication.
Here, we focus on school readiness through continued learning in a more structured, adult-led environment. We follow our Brighter Learning Approach (BLA) and the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum to help children understand the importance of listening to and following instructions.
At our Devizes nursery, children participate in graduation ceremonies, nativity plays, and gardening. Wildlife and nature play important roles in our activities, making learning fun with hatching chicks, watching butterflies metamorphose, and messy play.
In forest school, we learn in a safe and exploratory way. We have an open fire pit, woodworking shed, eco toilet, potting shed, and allotments for growing plants. Children can make their own paper from natural items and make dens using our outdoor resources.
We support the transition to school with visits from local schools and providing reports.
“At Sixpenny Day Nursery, we ensure that all children experience a welcoming, friendly, and stimulating environment, treating each one as an individual and helping them reach their full potential. We pride ourselves on our outdoor space, activities, and experiences. We always think outside the box and gently challenge the children, helping them develop their unique and individual personalities and strengths at their own pace.”
