Ofsted Outstanding
Outdoor learning
The Good Manors Day Nursery Stubbington Lodge team is proud to be rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted and welcomes you to tour our setting. A former family home that has since been refurbished, we have continued the family feel at our Portsmouth nursery, where attentive staff engage with children through meaningful play experiences and discussion to really understand what makes each child unique.
We’ve maximised our outdoor space to create an inviting and engaging learning environment. Children can explore water, a sand pit, plants and a mud kitchen, and we provide various resources to support all areas of learning as part of our holistic learning approach.
Taking care of animals and their environment is a keen topic for our children. They enjoy providing clean soil and cutting and preparing food for our pet African Land Snails and are supervised in handling them with care. Seasonal wildlife experiences allow children to explore animal life cycles, such as caterpillars becoming butterflies and ducklings hatching in an incubator.
We are close to local amenities, providing an excellent opportunity for children to explore and learn about the local community, including shops, North End Library and College Park Playground, where children enjoy the play equipment, plenty of green space and a children’s zoo with a variety of small animals including goats, rabbits, guinea pigs and chickens.

The Brighter Learning Approach (BLA) is unique to The Old Station Nursery group and is our advanced approach to the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and core pedagogy. It differs from traditional nursery teaching methods by providing real-life opportunities to enhance children’s natural curiosity, with emphasis on hands-on experiences, child-led learning, and whole development.
The six core areas promote active engagement and critical thinking whilst encouraging exploration, creativity, and collaboration. Each child learns at their own pace and is challenged and extended at appropriate times.
The best place to see the BLA in action is via our local nursery Facebook page, where each post explains which part of the curriculum the children are working on. Our parents also receive updates on the Parent App too.
Championing children's holistic health and laying the foundations for a happy, healthy and successful life.
Helping the future generation of global citizens to understand the world they live in and to believe they can make a difference.
Enabling early experiences in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM). Nurturing our next generation of investigators, inventors and innovators.
Enticing children to develop a life-long love of books and reading through engaging and interactive storytelling experiences. Building strong literacy skills while sparking imagination and creativity.
Engaging children in meaningful mathematical learning. Developing knowledge, building skills and exploring concepts, through purposeful play and plenty of practice.
Developing confident communicators by engaging in quality conversations with children every day, in a language rich and communication friendly environment.
We hold numerous clubs that enhance our bespoke Brighter Learning Approach to the Early Years Statutory Framework at our Portsmouth nursery so that the children in our care receive the best nursery care and education in the local area.
Children learn so much during their early years and take great joy in exploring the world around them. At our nursery they’re immersed into the world of Science through age appropriate hands-on experiments and activities designed to spark their curiosity.
Budding musicians can explore different instruments at our children’s nursery, as well as enjoying rhythmic games, and participating in interactive sing-along sessions. They’ll discover the joy of creating melodies, understanding beats, and expressing themselves through music. Each activity is carefully crafted to inspire a love for music and develop their auditory skills in a fun and engaging environment.
Come rain or shine, we tend our vegetable plots, teaching the children about the different stages of growth cycles and exploring the different tastes and textures of the produce. As Budding gardeners, children learn about the environment and gain lifelong sustainable growing skills and enjoyment, which they will carry with them throughout their lives.
At our children’s nursery Budding Artists are encouraged to explore their creativity through activities such as painting, drawing, and crafts. With a host of resources available, children are encouraged to experiment with colours and textures, and create imaginative masterpieces that showcase their unique talents.
From babies to pre-school, Good Manors Day Nursery Stubbington Lodge children enjoy measuring and mixing to bake delicious cakes and biscuits. The activity instils confidence whilst learning life-long skills such as weighing and measuring ingredients and following instructions.
Children have the opportunity to explore healthy alternatives, too, with tots developing their fine motor skills by carefully cutting, scooping and preparing snacks of vegetables and fruit.
Children at our Portsmouth children’s day nursery are supported with mental health awareness through movement. Alongside their peers, children encourage one another and build emotional resilience and sense of belonging when out in our local open spaces engaging in structured physical activities and games to improve hand-eye coordination, balance and timing.
Our nursery group is passionate about the link between home and nursery; the nursery experience is as much about the parent as it is for the child. Good Manors Day Nursery Stubbington Lodge commits to verbally updating you about your child’s day at pick-up time and via digital updates on the parent App.
We are here at any time should you wish to call us or want to discuss any area of your child’s care. We aim to look after our parents as well as our children so you can carry on with your day, work and career with a sense of peace.
First and foremost, you and we need to know that your child is safe. Before we can deliver the excellent curriculum that makes our nurseries so special, robust policies and procedures are followed to meet the exacting standards of Ofsted, building and fire regulations, food safety standards and staff DBS background checks and references.
Our staff are trained in numerous areas and we offer further training opportunities for staff who have an interest in a particular area.
For example, some of our nurseries have attained Millie’s Mark, an accreditation gained by having 100% of staff on site trained in paediatric first aid.
Mealtimes at our Portsmouth day nursery have a family feel and provide children with additional opportunities to be involved and independent.
Our wonderful chef prepares nutritious meals on-site from scratch using seasonal ingredients for variety and takes allergens, food intolerances and dietary preferences seriously.
We work with families to ensure every child’s individual needs are met.
Every child has a nursery key person who knows them best and who will be the child and parent’s main contact. Your key person at our nursery will update you about your child’s day and is there to answer your questions.
When your child moves to the next age group room, we hold several settling sessions with a new nursery key person.
We encourage our parents to view the new room too, and we will work with you to discuss the new routines, just like we did when you first started nursery.
It is wonderful to nurture and see our children graduate to primary school. Part of the unique offering of Good Manors Day Nursery Stubbington Lodge is our focus on the next stage of your child’s learning journey.
We prepare the children through school activities, teacher meet and greets and graduation ceremonies.
Our commitment is to support our parents too by providing child learning journey updates, parents evenings or one-to-ones and home link learning kits to enhance the link between nursery and home.
All our nurseries follow the Brighter Learning Approach, our bespoke version of the Early Years Statutory Framework. Within this, each nursery chooses extra clubs, activities, and enhancements suitable for their space.
Good Manors Day Nursery Stubbington Lodge children benefit from various clubs delivered by professionals and specially designed for early years education.
We also hold open days where parents and carers are encouraged to come along and meet other parents to build their own personal friendships and networks ahead of primary school.
Good Manors Day Nursery Stubbington Lodge offers flexible childcare with several session options and private, part-funded and some fully funded places for eligible families.

At Good Manors Day Nursery Stubbington Lodge, each spacious room benefits from natural light. Our baby room has been thoughtfully planned, and attentive staff help babies settle into nursery life, carefully following routines from home.
Babies develop their sensory skills through exploring soft play equipment, mirrors, and musical instruments.
Parents are welcome and encouraged to join settling-in sessions before starting nursery, which provides extra reassurance for baby and parent.
Every child is unique and will settle at their own pace, so we support the transition to new rooms by offering plenty of settling-in visits to familiarise themselves with new surroundings and peers.
Children are supported to reach new milestones with confidence and independence, such as walking, and when the time comes to potty train, staff work with parent and child to support the transition.
When progressing to Tweenies, daily activities are centred around children’s interests but become more structured. Music and imaginative play provide an engaging environment for children to express themselves.
In our preschool room, staff work closely with children to prepare them for their next chapter in education, supporting them with routines and independence in readiness for school.
The older children at our Portsmouth day nursery develop their personalities and learn life skills such as compassion and sharing. They self-serve at mealtimes and put on their own coats and clothes. Listening and following instructions are learned during structured activities.
Join us for our upcoming open day, where you can tour our vibrant classrooms, meet our caring staff, and discover how we nurture your child’s growth and development through outdoor learning.
