The Brighter Learning Approach (BLA) is unique to The Old Station Nursery group and is our advanced approach to the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and core pedagogy. It differs from traditional nursery teaching methods by providing real-life opportunities to enhance children’s natural curiosity, with emphasis on hands-on experiences, child-led learning, and whole development.
The six core areas promote active engagement and critical thinking whilst encouraging exploration, creativity, and collaboration. Each child learns at their own pace and is challenged and extended at appropriate times.
The best place to see the BLA in action is via our local nursery Facebook page, where each post explains which part of the curriculum the children are working on. Our parents also receive updates on the Parent App too.
Championing children's holistic health and laying the foundations for a happy, healthy and successful life.
Helping the future generation of global citizens to understand the world they live in and to believe they can make a difference.
Enabling early experiences in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM). Nurturing our next generation of investigators, inventors and innovators.
Enticing children to develop a life-long love of books and reading through engaging and interactive storytelling experiences. Building strong literacy skills while sparking imagination and creativity.
Engaging children in meaningful mathematical learning. Developing knowledge, building skills and exploring concepts, through purposeful play and plenty of practice.
Developing confident communicators by engaging in quality conversations with children every day, in a language rich and communication friendly environment.
We offer a variety of extra clubs that enrich our Brighter Learning Approach, our customised version of the Early Years Statutory Framework. External providers are also welcomed to lead specialised clubs, enhancing our curriculum even further.
With the aid of a ‘cool touch’ oven, child-safe equipment and the children’s chef’s hats and aprons we follow a set curriculum to learn about the joys of cooking and gain lifelong skills such as measuring, counting and following set instructions.
Budding musicians can explore different instruments at our children’s nursery, as well as enjoying rhythmic games, and participating in interactive sing-along sessions. They’ll discover the joy of creating melodies, understanding beats, and expressing themselves through music. Each activity is carefully crafted to inspire a love for music and develop their auditory skills in a fun and engaging environment.
At Sandhills Day Nursery Heath Mill, we proudly offer yoga as an exciting extracurricular activity. Our specially designed yoga sessions are provided by Tatty Bumpkin Yoga and through gentle stretches, poses, and breathing exercises, children develop flexibility, balance, and body awareness.
The Yoga classes are very popular with the children and promotes relaxation and mindfulness, teaching children valuable techniques for managing stress and emotions, and also enhances concentration, focus, and self-control.
At Sandhills Day Nursery Heath Mill, our Budding Chefs love getting involved in the kitchen. This club is all about eagerly participating in making meals and baking tasty treats – sometimes for mum and dad and sometimes these treats never leave the nursery.
Budding Chefs club is both fun and educational, teaching valuable skills like measuring, counting, and following instructions.
Our Budding Movers club offers a variety of dynamic classes that incorporate musical instruments, sensory play, puppets, and dance. These activities enhance coordination, creativity, and self-confidence.
When the weather is nice, we take our dance club outside where children enjoy dancing with streamers, hopping on coloured disks, and jumping through hoops to lively music.
Rain or shine, our Budding Gardeners love tending to our vegetable planters. They learn about plant growth cycles and explore the different tastes and textures of the produce they help grow. These gardening activities teach environmental responsibility and sustainable practices, skills that will stay with them for life.
At Sandhills Day Nursery Heath Mill, our Budding Scientists dive into exciting, hands-on experiments. They explore different materials and concepts, from making magical potions to embarking on space-themed adventures. The children love bringing home their scientific creations to share with their families.
Budding Artists at Heath Mill is a beloved program among our children, and parents appreciate the creative outlet without the mess at home. These sessions involve a variety of materials such as paint, natural elements, playdoh, lentils, shredded paper, and glue. These activities encourage artistic exploration and develop fine motor skills. Our nursery is set up to support messy play, and we ensure everything is clean and tidy before lunch.
Our nursery group is passionate about the link between home and nursery; the nursery experience is as much about the parent as it is for the child. Sandhills Day Nursery Heath Mill commits to verbally updating you about your child’s day at pick-up time and via digital updates on the parent App.
We are here at any time should you wish to call us or want to discuss any area of your child’s care. We aim to look after our parents as well as our children so you can carry on with your day, work and career with a sense of peace.
First and foremost, you and we need to know that your child is safe. Before we can deliver the excellent curriculum that makes our nurseries so special, robust policies and procedures are followed to meet the exacting standards of Ofsted, building and fire regulations, food safety standards and staff DBS background checks and references.
Our staff are trained in numerous areas and we offer further training opportunities for staff who have an interest in a particular area. For example, some of our nurseries have attained Millie’s Mark, an accreditation gained by having 100% of staff on site trained in paediatric first aid.
Nutritious hot meals are prepared on-site at by our cook and menus are rotated every three weeks. Good nutrition is essential during childhood as it is a time of rapid growth, development and activity.
Our chefs are trained using the Eatwell NHS guidelines to ensure mealtimes are delicious, packed with good things that enjoyable for children to eat.
Every child has a nursery key person who knows them best and who will be the child and parent’s main contact. Your key person at our nursery will update you about your child’s day and is there to answer your questions.
When your child moves to the next age group room, we hold several settling sessions with a new nursery key person.
We encourage our parents to view the new room too, and we will work with you to discuss the new routines, just like we did when you first started nursery.
All our nurseries follow the Brighter Learning Approach, our bespoke version of the Early Years Statutory Framework. Within this, each nursery chooses extra clubs, activities, and enhancements suitable for their space.
Sandhills Day Nursery Heath Mill offers flexible childcare with several session options as well as private, part-funded and some fully funded places for eligible families.

We believe in supporting smooth transitions for children as they prepare for school. We actively invite teachers from key primary schools to visit us, allowing the children to meet their new teachers in a familiar environment. This interaction helps build familiarity and comfort, easing the transition process.
Our dedicated team of key carers collaborates closely with teachers to share valuable insights about each child’s development stages and individual needs. This communication ensures continuity and supports personalised care and learning.
To further support our children and families, we offer transition sessions on-site where parents can actively participate and engage with the transition process.
In the baby rooms, babies set their own routine, and the pace of the day revolves entirely around them. There are cots set up with additional sleep mats available so that the babies can sleep whenever needed whilst under the continuous observation of our team. All bedding is provided and laundered here at nursery and parents are encouraged to bring in children’s own comfort items.
The room for our youngest babies operates a ‘no outdoor shoe policy’ to ensure the space is hygienic and suitable for those children who are not yet walking.
Once children are confident and physically ready, at around 2.5 years, they will progress into the toddler room. Here we start to encourage more independence, providing children with the chance to thrive and begin to develop the skills they need to support them in their early years. This makes the perfect preparation for the children before going into pre-school.
We encourage group discussions for short periods to build children’s confidence as well as the facilities to role play, construct, explore and experiment throughout each day. A cosy corner and a craft area are also accessible to children.
Planned activities as well as time to free play gives the children countless learning opportunities all day, every day.
Once children are around 3, they move up into the pre-school room, where they have even more opportunities for learning through play. Whilst there is an outline ‘timetable’ for the pre-school, activities are again child-led whenever possible.
Mealtimes continue to be sociable occasions and children are encouraged to help with table laying and serving as they would at home.
Throughout the age groups, we work through 7 different areas of learning and prepare children to progress confidently through the Early Years Foundation Stage. Our pre-school room focuses on getting your child ready for mainstream school by providing lots of opportunities and activities to encourage the children to think about the choices they make throughout each day. We provide children with the skills they need for the next step in their education with every effort being made to build links with local schools that your child may move on to.
Throughout each day, children focus on phonics, numbers and fine motor skills that will be invaluable in all future learning.
“Our team have developed a stimulating and exciting environment to help children develop across all areas of learning. With such a welcoming atmosphere and a devoted, passionate team, we help children to feel safe, secure and treasured throughout their nursery journey.”
