Outdoor learning
Our day nursery is a charming old school building in the picturesque village of Fen Drayton, Cambridgeshire. Our scenic setting and location allows the children to often enjoy walks around the village shops and church and once in a while we visit the Fen Drayton nature reserve to see the natural lake habitats, all of which helps to extend and enrich their learning beyond the nursery environment.
At Fen Drayton, we take pride in offering a blended EYFS and Montessori approach to learning, creating an abundance of opportunities for children to develop into curious and confident learners.
We ensure our nursery rooms are warm and welcoming for the children, complete with carefully selected natural resources that tie into our unique curriculum and enhance the children’s learning and development.
We’re lucky to enjoy two nursery gardens at Fen Drayton. The main garden is a spacious area where children can run around and explore – using up all their excess energy. It also features a vegetable and herb patch, mud kitchen, digging area, bug area, and construction zone.
Resources in the garden include tyres, guttering, wooden beams, and stepping stones, which the children can use to build obstacle courses, water runs, and ball runs. The most popular item in the garden is our stationary canoe, which is used by the children in many imaginative ways.
The smaller garden, accessible from the toddler room, includes a mud kitchen, discovery area, and sand pit, all of which is tailored to the smaller children’s level.

The Brighter Learning Approach (BLA) is unique to The Old Station Nursery group and is our advanced approach to the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and core pedagogy. It differs from traditional nursery teaching methods by providing real-life opportunities to enhance children’s natural curiosity, with emphasis on hands-on experiences, child-led learning, and whole development.
The six core areas promote active engagement and critical thinking whilst encouraging exploration, creativity, and collaboration. Each child learns at their own pace and is challenged and extended at appropriate times.
The best place to see the BLA in action is via our local nursery Facebook page, where each post explains which part of the curriculum the children are working on. Our parents also receive updates on the Parent App too.
Championing children's holistic health and laying the foundations for a happy, healthy and successful life.
Helping the future generation of global citizens to understand the world they live in and to believe they can make a difference.
Enabling early experiences in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM). Nurturing our next generation of investigators, inventors and innovators.
Enticing children to develop a life-long love of books and reading through engaging and interactive storytelling experiences. Building strong literacy skills while sparking imagination and creativity.
Engaging children in meaningful mathematical learning. Developing knowledge, building skills and exploring concepts, through purposeful play and plenty of practice.
Developing confident communicators by engaging in quality conversations with children every day, in a language rich and communication friendly environment.
Our nursery is beloved within Fen Drayton village and we like to explore as much outside as we do inside – whatever the weather. We hold numerous extra clubs that enhance the Brighter Learning Approach, our bespoke version of the Early Years Statutory Framework and we invite in Super Star Sports in bi-weekly for sports and dance sessions.
Budding musicians can explore different instruments at our children’s nursery, as well as enjoying rhythmic games, and participating in interactive sing-along sessions. They’ll discover the joy of creating melodies, understanding beats, and expressing themselves through music. Each activity is carefully crafted to inspire a love for music and develop their auditory skills in a fun and engaging environment.
We know that physical activity has been suggested to increase serotonin in the brain, which impacts the brain’s ability to concentrate on tasks. Super Star Sports come in to deliver multi-discipline sports that help the children with their preparation for Primary School PE, improve emotional development and gets them working as a team.
Our little chefs at Fen Drayton get excited when it’s time for meal preparation or creating delicious teatime desserts during baking mornings.
Through these fun activities, children learn important skills like measuring, counting, and following instructions.
Our Budding Movers club is all about creating developmental classes featuring musical instruments, sensory equipment, puppets, and dance. These activities help develop coordination, creativity, and confidence, making them a hit with the children.
When weather permits, our favourite thing is to hold dance club in the garden! The children love using the streamers, hoping across coloured disks and jumping through hoops to a musical backdrop.
Come rain or shine, we tend our vegetable plots, teaching the children about the stages of growth cycles and the different tastes and textures of produce. These activities teach children about the environment and sustainable gardening, skills they will cherish for life.
At Fen Drayton, our young scientists enjoy exploring different materials and learning about the world. From potion-making to space-themed projects, the children engage in hands-on activities and proudly bring home their creations to share with their families.
Budding Artists at Fen Drayton is a big hit with the children, and parents often tell us they prefer the mess on our nursery floor rather than their home carpets! These sessions include a variety of materials like paint, flour, leaves, playdoh, lentils, shredded paper, and glue, to name just a few.
We use all sorts of items that children love to explore, enhancing their creative development and fine motor skills. Our nursery is set up to support messy play, and we ensure everything is cleaned up and tidy before lunch.
Our nursery group is passionate about the link between home and nursery; the nursery experience is as much about the parent as it is for the child. Sunhill Day Nursery Fen Drayton commits to verbally updating you about your child’s day at pick-up time and via digital updates on the parent App.
We are here at any time should you wish to call us or want to discuss any area of your child’s care. We aim to look after our parents as well as our children so you can carry on with your day, work and career with a sense of peace.
First and foremost, you and we need to know that your child is safe. Before we can deliver the excellent curriculum that makes our nurseries so special, robust policies and procedures are followed to meet the exacting standards of Ofsted, building and fire regulations, food safety standards and staff DBS background checks and references.
Our staff are trained in numerous areas and we offer further training opportunities for staff who have an interest in a particular area. For example, some of our nurseries have attained Millie’s Mark, an accreditation gained by having 100% of staff on site trained in paediatric first aid.
At Fen Drayton Nursery, we are proud to have a dedicated chef who prepares fresh meals for the children every day. Our daily menu includes breakfast, lunch, tea, and two healthy snacks, with milk offered at snack times and breakfast.
The chef caters to all allergies, intolerances, and parental preferences, ensuring every child’s dietary needs are met. Our menu follows a three-week rolling schedule and is designed to suit all seasons with meals that match the time of year.
During meal times, all staff members sit down and eat with the children, creating a family-style dining experience that fosters a sense of community and togetherness.
Every child has a nursery key person who knows them best and who will be the child and parent’s main contact. Your key person at our nursery will update you about your child’s day and is there to answer your questions.
When your child moves to the next age group room, we hold several settling sessions with a new nursery key person. We encourage our parents to view the new room too, and we will work with you to discuss the new routines, just like we did when you first started nursery.
It is wonderful to nurture and see our children graduate to primary school. Part of the unique offering of Sunhill Day Nursery Fen Drayton is our focus on the next stage of your child’s learning journey.
We prepare the children through school activities, teacher meet and greets and graduation ceremonies.
Our commitment is to support our parents too by providing child learning journey updates, parents evenings or one-to-ones and home link learning kits to enhance the link between nursery and home.
All our nurseries follow the Brighter Learning Approach, our bespoke version of the Early Years Statutory Framework. Within this, each nursery chooses extra clubs, activities, and enhancements suitable for their space.

As toddlers progress, they move into the Sunbeams Room, which features its own dedicated garden equipped with slides, a mud kitchen, water play, a sand pit, a discovery area, seesaws, and a rocking horse.
Here, we foster independence by allowing children to freely move between indoor and outdoor areas throughout the day.
When children reach 3 years old, they transition into our Pre-school Room. This space includes a specially designed garden with two climbing frames, a mud kitchen, a construction area, literacy and maths corners, a water play zone, a sand pit, and even a canoe for imaginative play.
