Encouraging Confident Communication Through Water Play

Apricot Day Nursery Water Play

The children at Apricot Day Nursery explored the deep, blue sea to find the sea creatures and animals, developing their communication and language skills along the way.

Apricot Day Nursery Water Play

The team set up a beautiful water play based activity, with the addition of blue rice and crazy foam, to recreate the ‘sea’. They placed a number of sea creatures and animals in the foam, such as seahorses, sharks, whales and penguins, which the children had to find and pull out from the foam.

The children rolled up their sleeves and were elbow deep in the deep, blue sea! They showed a lot of curiosity as they navigated through the foam to find and discover all of the different animals hiding from them.

As the children were exploring, we asked the children to talk about the different colours they could see. The used their communication and language skills to describe the different blues in the sea as well as the colours of the sea creatures and animals. One child said that the penguin is ‘black and white’ whilst another noticed that the seahorse was ‘pink’.

This activity was a great way for the children to confidently express what they could see, helping to develop their communication and language skills. Water play is also a great way for the children to develop their motor skills and sensory exploration.
