Budding Chefs Bake Brilliant Bread

Apricot Day Nursery Baking

Our budding little chefs at Apricot Day Nursery have baked their very own bread from scratch; reaping the rewards of their hard work later in the day by tasting their delicious loaf!

Apricot Day Nursery Baking

First it was important for the children to understand all the different components needed to make their bread, so with a little help, they collected everything they needed including flour, water, a large bowl and a wooden spoon.

The children then helped to measure out all of the ingredients and put everything in the bowl, not without exploring the feel of the flour and water first! Using the wooden spoons, the children mixed the ingredients together to make dough.

We explained to the children that next, we needed to ‘knead’ the dough, and what this meant. All of the children had a go at kneading, and we encouraged them to use four simple words, “mix”, “pat”, “push” and “pop”, to help them remember what to do. As we recalled the words together, the children very quickly learnt what came next!

Activities such as this, encourage the children engage in cooking from an early age. The children developed their fine motor skills through measuring, pouring and mixing. They also engaged in early mathematics through counting and learning to follow instructions. And of course, the best part of this activity is the taste test at the end; seeing the children proud of their achievement, and if there’s any left, taking a bite home for their family to enjoy (but we can’t always promise there will be any left!!).
