Butter making at Faversham

At Townsend Montessori Nursery Faversham, we love bringing hands-on activities that are not only fun but also full of learning opportunities. Today, the children in our Pre-school and Poppy rooms had an exciting time making butter from scratch.

The activity started with the children pouring double cream into a container and then shaking the container. As they shook, the children observed the magical moment when the cream turned into butter, and the buttermilk separated. It was a great way for them to learn about cause and effect, as well as the transformation of ingredients.

Throughout the process, we encouraged the children to think about the changes they saw and felt. We talked about how the texture changed, how the colour shifted, and how they could feel the difference as the butter formed. This simple activity helped the children develop a greater understanding of the science behind food preparation while using their fine and gross motor skills.

After all that hard work, the children used the fresh buttermilk to make banana cakes, which they then got to enjoy! The excitement of seeing how their effort turned into something so tasty made the activity even more rewarding.

This hands-on experience not only taught the children about food production but also allowed them to practice teamwork, patience, and perseverance—skills that will serve them well throughout life. The best part? They had so much fun and learned a lot along the way!

At Townsend Montessori, we believe that learning through play and real-life experiences is essential for the children’s development. Activities like these encourage curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving—all while having fun. If you would like to learn more about our nursery and book a tour, click here.
