‘Tis The Season to be Exploring Pumpkins

Wellingborough Pumpkins Boy and Girl

Following on from a lovely Autumn walk where the children were curious about the changes to the trees as the colour transitioned from green to orange and red, they have been eager to learn more about the different colours and smells of Autumn.

What better way to explore Autumn than through pumpkins – ‘tis the season after all! The team acquired a range of pumpkins: from big ones to small ones, smooth ones to bumpy ones, and orange ones to black ones. The children carefully examined each whole pumpkin, noting the differences in colour, weight, texture and size. They were amazed at how many different pumpkins there were!

The following day, the team cut up the pumpkins into smaller pieces. The children eagerly explored the cut up pieces, feeling the texture of the pulp and seeds, and smelling the defined smell of the inside of a pumpkin. The children continued to explore their senses by squashing the pump between their fingers and getting a little bit messy!

This activity was a great way of extending the children’s curiosity about Autumn and engaging with their senses. By discussing their experiences of each pumpkin, they were able to develop their communication and language skills, whilst also learning about the world around us.
