Our Filkins children became nature detectives during a fun Forest School environment hunt, discovering bugs and boosting their language skills outdoors.
At The Old Station Nursery Filkins, our children recently took part in an exciting environment hunt as part of their Forest School adventure, and what a day it was.
The session was designed to help children explore the natural world around them, encouraging curiosity, discovery and a deeper connection with their surroundings. With their wildlife search list in hand, the children eagerly ventured outdoors, searching for signs of life in the garden and woodland areas.
There was plenty of excitement as they spotted a range of minibeasts from slimy snails to shy woodlice. Some children were even brave enough to hold their discoveries, showing great courage and care for the natural world. Their eyes lit up with wonder as they took in each detail, whether it was the texture of a snail’s shell or the movement of a tiny bug.
Beyond exploration, the activity also supported the children’s speech and language development. They were encouraged to name the animals they found and took great pride in repeating and mimicking the words from their wildlife list. These moments of learning through play are key to building vocabulary and confidence in communication, especially in a setting that stimulates all the senses.
Our Forest School sessions are an important part of the nursery experience, offering hands-on, child-led learning in a rich, outdoor environment. They support children’s development in so many ways from physical movement and coordination to social skills and environmental awareness.
We’re so proud of our little explorers and the enthusiasm they bring to every new challenge.
Let the wild adventures continue!
