Encouraging Fire Safety Using Fine Motor Skills and Hand Eye Coordination

Margate Fire Activity Boy

Following a recent practise fire drill at the nursery, the children became very curious about fire safety! The team extended their curiosity through an interactive activity, furthering their knowledge and understanding about fire safety.

As a group, the children discussed ways to prevent a fire from starting and what to do in the event of a fire happening. There were lots of good discussions, with the children communicating their ideas confidently, and the children learning lots of new ‘fire-related’ vocabulary.

The children then worked together to put out the ‘fire’ in a group activity outside using pipettes and spray bottles. This was a great activity to extend the children’s learning, work together as a team, and use their fine motor skills as well as hand eye coordination.

Keeping safe is an important part of the children’s learning at nursery. One of the ways in which we support the children’s knowledge of safety is through our PC Paws. PC Paws is the nursery’s health and safety mascot and is designed to encourage the children to develop skills in recognising, judging and managing risks safely, through taking part in positive play experiences. These skills can act as a powerful form of prevention in risky situations.
