As part of our ‘My Happy and Healthy Self’ curriculum, we teach the children the importance of taking care of their health. This can help them to develop self-care skills and empower them to make healthy choices throughout the lives.

One of the simple ways we can do this at nursery, is to get the children to create their own fruit kebabs. The children had the opportunity to choose their favourite fruits from a selection of different fruits, with some even trying something new! Then, using one handed tools, the children safely used the knives to cut their chosen fruit into smaller pieces to create their own kebabs.

This facilitated conversation about healthy eating and gave the children the opportunity to share their opinions of what their favourite fruit is. They also developed their fine motor skills whilst using the tools to cut the fruit and thread it on to the kebab stick.

Including your child in healthy cooking is a great way for them to learn about different ingredients and where food comes from. Even better, children are more likely to eat the fruit and vegetables that they have prepared!
