Sandpaper numerals activity

Montessori sandpaper numerals

Support your child’s early number recognition and fine motor development with this simple, tactile activity you can easily adapt at home.

Montessori sandpaper numerals

Looking for a simple and meaningful way to introduce numbers at home? Our Montessori-inspired sandpaper numeral activity is a fantastic way to support early number recognition, pre-writing skills and concentration.

What you’ll need:

  • Numbers 0–9, made from sandpaper (or get creative and make your own with card and sand, felt, or textured fabric)
  • A soft mat or table to work on
  • A quiet space for focused learning

Let’s get started:

Invite your child to the activity by showing them how to carry the numerals to your workspace carefully. Begin by choosing just a few numbers (1–3 or 1–5). This gentle approach helps children build confidence and focus.

Introduce each number one at a time:

  • Trace the number slowly with your index finger and thumb (the “pincer grip”) while saying its name clearly.
  • Pass the number to your child and ask them to trace and repeat the number after you.
  • Once they’re familiar with numbers 1–9, introduce the idea of zero – this can be a fun moment to talk about what it means to have “nothing”!

When your child is ready, they can:

  • Match and name numbers you hand them
  • Put the numbers in order from 0 to 9
  • Try putting them in reverse (can they count backwards?)
  • Wear a blindfold and guess the number by touch!
  • For a creative twist, place tracing or plain paper over the numbers and let your child rub a crayon over the top to reveal the numeral underneath. Can they name what appears?

Why this activity matters:

This activity isn’t just about recognising numbers. It’s also helping your child:

  • Develop fine motor skills through tracing
  • Build concentration and memory
  • Understand quantities and the written form of numbers
  • Practise skills needed for early writing.

No sandpaper? No problem!

You can create your own numerals using cardboard and:

  • Sand from the garden
  • Salt or sugar (glued carefully!)
  • Textured paper or fabric scraps
