Rolling a rug activity

Encourage care, control, and coordination with this simple everyday task that builds responsibility and readiness for writing.

Montessori activity - rolling a rug

Rolling a rug may seem like a basic task, but in montessori-inspired learning, even the smallest routines have a purpose. This calming, focused activity teaches children how to care for their environment, strengthens motor skills, and promotes independence – all with just one small rug.

What you’ll need:

  • A small rug or mat that can be rolled up easily (a yoga mat, picnic mat or small floor mat works well)

Let’s get started:

  • Show your child how to hold the rug with both hands and begin rolling from one end, keeping it as straight as possible.
  • Encourage them to smooth out any ripples before rolling further.
  • Once finished, the rolled rug should be returned neatly to its place, ready for the next time it’s needed.

This isn’t just tidying up – it’s learning how to finish a task with care and pride.

Learning benefits:

Direct learning includes:

  • Fine and gross motor skill development
  • Responsibility and care for shared materials

Indirect learning supports:

  • Visual discrimination and attention to detail
  • Focus and concentration
  • Use of the pincer grip – a key pre-writing skill
  • Respect for space and community

Ideas to extend the activity:

  • Invite an older sibling or peer to show a younger child how to roll the rug – great for developing leadership and communication
  • Use this task as part of a tidy-up routine at the end of other home learning or playtime activities

No montessori rug? No problem!

Any lightweight mat or towel will work just as well – just something your child can roll and carry on their own.

Safety first:

Ensure the rug is safe for your child to carry and there are no tripping hazards nearby.
