The winter chill has arrived, but it hasn’t dampened the spirits of our resilient rascals at Little Green Rascals Flaxton! Our fantastic forest school continues to be a place of exploration, learning, and adventure, even in the frostiest weather.
This week, we’ve been investigating the effects of cold weather on our environment. The children have been expanding their vocabulary with words like frost, ice, melting, and freezing, as they observed and interacted with nature.
One of our favourite activities was using warm water in pipettes to melt ice and discover hidden surprises inside. This hands-on experiment supported their scientific understanding of how things change state, sparking curiosity and questions like, “Is it like cooking food from the freezer?”
To keep warm while exploring, we kept active with adventures like pretending to go on a bear hunt and playing hide-and-seek among the trees. The children also exercised their gross motor skills by using big sticks to smash through ice—a fun and empowering way to show off their “big muscles”!
Of course, no winter day in the forest is complete without warming up by the fire. Toasting marshmallows and sipping on delicious hot chocolate brought the perfect cosy end to our chilly adventures. 😋
