At Sunhill Day Nursery Berkhamsted, we’re proud to be bringing our Next Stop School initiative to life – supporting children (and their families) as they get ready for the exciting transition to primary school.

Launched earlier this year, the programme is designed to make this milestone feel positive, supported, and full of confidence-building moments. From independence skills to a love of learning, children are gaining everything they need to feel ready for their big next step.

A newly released video captures the initiative in action, showcasing the joy, pride, and sense of community it’s bringing to children, families, and practitioners.

Emma Pittam, Early Years Director at The Old Station Nursery Group, shared:

“We launched Next Stop School because we know the transition to school is a huge milestone, not just for children, but for parents too. It’s been incredible to see the children rising to the challenge, proudly wearing their backpacks, and sharing their progress with families at home.”

A Shared Journey with Families
Next Stop School is all about collaboration. At Sunhill Berkhamsted, children and families are enjoying activities such as:

  • Transition-themed stories and role play
  • Group discussions about feelings and expectations around starting school
  • Celebrating milestones with child-friendly trackers and magnets
  • At-home learning with special Next Stop School backpacks

Regular updates for parents via our family app
To make preparations even smoother, families have also received a £30 Clarks voucher and access to a wealth of online resources. One parent even told us their child’s magnet is now part of their morning routine – a small ritual that builds big confidence.

Rooted in Brighter Learning
The initiative is underpinned by our Brighter Learning Approach, which enriches the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). From phonics and storytelling to independence at mealtimes, it’s all about helping children develop emotionally, socially, and academically.

As we move through the summer term, Sunhill Berkhamsted and other nurseries across the group will continue sharing stories of children proudly preparing to take their Next Stop School journey.
