Millie's Mark

The Old Station Nursery Group Nurseries Awarded Millie's Mark for Outstanding Child Safety.

The Old Station Nursery on Gibson Drive and The Old Station Nursery on Mottershead Drive, two esteemed local children’s nurseries, have proudly received the prestigious Millie’s Mark Award. This noteworthy recognition was awarded to them on January 25th, 2022, in recognition of their exceptional commitment to exceeding expectations in staff qualifications for paediatric first aid.

Both nurseries, providing high-quality care to children aged 0-5 years old, have demonstrated their unwavering dedication to ensuring the safety of the children in their care.

Millie’s Mark is a distinguished accolade presented to Early Years settings that go above and beyond the necessary requirements to safeguard children. It signifies that all staff directly involved in child care hold paediatric first aid certifications and possess the competence to effectively apply their knowledge in practice. Established in 2012, Millie’s Mark advocates for comprehensive paediatric first aid training for all Early Years staff.

Jess, the Nursery Manager at both The Old Station Nursery on Gibson Drive and The Old Station Nursery on Mottershead Drive, expressed her pride in achieving Millie’s Mark. “Millie’s Mark is an outstanding achievement for a nursery setting. The team are always willing to strive for the best possible care, by going above and beyond the minimum requirements for keeping the children safe. I am very proud of both teams, for always wanting to offer the best possible care to the children”

The attainment of prestigious awards like Millie’s Mark underscores the paramount importance of safety within The Old Station Nursery Group. Ensuring the well-being of the children, families, and staff members remains a top priority for the nursery group.

More about Millie’s Mark

Millie’s Trust was set up by Joanne and Dan Thompson in 2012 after their nine-month-old daughter Millie tragically passed away whilst choking on food at nursery.

The organisation now campaigns to increase the legal first aid requirements in all childcare settings, to ensure that every aspect of paediatric first aid training is kept alive and in the front of the minds of all staff. This ensures confidence, readiness and capability. The award, in Millie’s honour, gives parents peace of mind when choosing the right childcare setting for their child.

“Millie’s Mark is our gorgeous daughter’s legacy, and to see the development of a voluntary scheme mark introduced into nurseries is an achievement not just for us, but for parents everywhere. We put our children into the hands of childcarer’s and we expect they will be cared for in the best possible way. A setting achieving Millie’s Mark is an exceptional achievement for not only the nursery but for the children and the parents too. The achievement of the mark acknowledges that staff would be confident in maybe one day saving a child’s life if they needed to. Confidence is a key factor in the administration of first aid and Millie’s Mark allows nurseries to feel confident in their own team.

Our journey towards this mark has been tough, hard work and there have been many tears shed, but we are so amazingly proud that this mark is now established. We would like to acknowledge every person and every childcare establishment that has supported the petition and the development of the mark, as without your support this would not have been possible. We look forward to seeing the mark in your child’s setting very soon.”  – Joanne and Dan Thompson
