The Pre-School children were extremely excited that their carrots were ready to harvest! The children, who planted the seeds themselves a few months ago, have been eagerly awaiting the day that they could dig them up!

Since planting the seeds, the children have been checking the growth of their carrots every day as they take special care to water them. As they harvested their carrots, the children were eager to measure each of the carrots and curious to compare the different sizes. As they did so, they used the correct mathematical language such as ‘longer’, ‘shorter’, ‘bigger’ and ‘smaller’. Their next challenge was to decide what to do with the carrots! Some children decided it would be a good idea to wash the dirt off the carrots and cook the carrots for lunch; while others decided to use the carrots as inspiration for their painting!

It is important for the children to engage in activities such as this as it gave the children the chance to take responsibility to care for their seeds every day; as well as use their mathematical language and skills to measure and compare each carrot. The children were able to expand this activity even further by using their carrots to engage in further cooking and creative activities.
