The holiday spirit is alive and thriving at the Old Station Nursery in Bridgetown, where children have been immersed in an enchanting Gingerbread Man Week.
This activity was inspired by the children’s curiosity, sparked when the book selection in the literacy area introduced the beloved tale of The Gingerbread Man.
Bringing Stories to Life The week began with storytelling sessions where children stepped into the shoes of the characters. Taking to the stage, they reenacted the story, enhancing their confidence and creativity. Each child transformed into a “super storyteller,” creating a dynamic blend of fun and literacy development.
Crafting Creativity Art and design came into focus as the children created their own gingerbread men on felt paper. From choosing colors to deciding the placement of eyes and buttons, these activities encouraged decision-making, artistic expression, and even early math skills as they worked on counting and shapes.
Sensory Play and Math Exploration To stimulate sensory learning, the children experimented with scented playdough. Using shape cutters, they honed their fine motor skills while creating gingerbread shapes.
Delicious Learning in the Kitchen In the cookery club, children from both pre-school and after-school programs baked gingerbread biscuits. From measuring ingredients to mixing and following the recipe, they practiced essential math and science skills in a hands-on, delicious way. The biscuits were a hit with the children and parents alike—many have already requested the recipe to recreate the magic at home!
Stay tuned for more festive updates and the release of the gingerbread recipe—because who wouldn’t want to bring a little bit of Bridgetown magic home?
