At Little Green Rascals Bishopthorpe, we are proud to have a very special member of our team – Mabel, our nursery dog. Mabel has been with us for over a year, starting her journey at just eight weeks old. Now, she attends the nursery two days a week, making a big impact on both the children and staff.
Mabel is particularly popular with our Pre-School children, but her gentle nature and presence make her a favourite across all age groups. From the beginning, the idea was for Mabel to become a form of therapy dog and a learning companion for our little Rascals. Over time, she has become an important part of teaching the children how to care for and respect animals, while also providing emotional support.
The children help care for Mabel during her time at the nursery, learning valuable lessons about animal care, understanding canine body language, and what it takes for animals to thrive. Mabel, in turn, loves her time with the children and is always eager to spend her days by their side.
Given her natural abilities and the positive influence she has had, we are excited to share that Mabel will be starting her official Therapy Dog training with ‘PAWS Therapy Dog Training,’ alongside our Deputy Manager, Lydia. Once she completes the programme, Mabel will be evaluated to become a certified Children’s Therapy Dog, further enhancing the support she provides to our little ones.
We are so proud of Mabel’s journey and can’t wait to see her continue to thrive in her role, bringing joy, comfort, and learning to everyone at Little Green Rascals.
