The one thing you can be sure of in childcare, I guess as in most walks of life, is that you can’t please everyone all of the time. This week we had one parent who actually complained that we did open a nursery in an area badly affected by snow, as she didn’t want to go to work and would now have to go as she had no excuse about having childcare problems!
However, on the whole our staff team have been fantastic and in Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire in particular, they have battled through snow and ice to get into nursery whenever possible. Usually the number of staff who travel on foot into work approximately matches the number of parents who can walk into nursery, so whenever possible we have opened, even if it has been for smaller groups and with an early finish to get everyone home safely.
One of the sure signs you are getting old is when you see snow as an inconvenience rather than as being fun. This week I have definitely been a grown up, and with most of my management team have been planning, adjusting and communicating about problems caused by the snow. It is always good to look out of the window and see the sheer joy the children are getting from the icy conditions and that sense of exploration and wonderment of a new sensation.
We are hoping that next week will bring a return to rather more normal weather conditions for this time of year and a chance to get on with all the card making, glitter sprinkling and Christmas preparations that make up nursery life for the next couple of weeks. I hope we’ve met your expectations wherever possible this week and that the snow hasn’t caused too much disruption for you and yours. Have a safe weekend and stay warm.
