Wombourne February News: Pancakes, Snow and Dinosaurs

Wombourne-scaled

The month of February has been full of exciting celebrations! We started the month with snow falling and we end the month with some beautiful sunshine and signs of Spring on its way, with our daffodils starting to make an appearance in the garden.

February news

Love was in the air at nursery on Valentine’s Day with many children and staff wearing red clothing for the colour of love. We made heart cupcakes, painted love bugs and made Valentine’s wreaths. Love was also in the air for the staff team as our lovely Cara got engaged, congratulations!

The children have tried somyummy food this month with Pancake Day and Chinese New Year. Lynn, our Nursery Cook, made sweet and sour chicken with noodles for our Chinese meal which was enjoyed by all.

We all took part in the social media campaign #ThumbsUpForEarlyYears to raise awareness and to show appreciation of our early years practitioners. The focus of the takeover was to demonstrate our appreciation to our teams for the dedication and commitment they have shown over the past year. Thank you to everyone for joining in last week, we were amazed by the number of thumbs up photos!

This month, the babies, 0-2 years, have enjoyed exploring in the snow at the start of the month. The older babies have shown a keen interest in the ‘loose parts’ resource that we have introduced, with many of the children enjoying balancing the corks and hooking the circle hooks on to the stand.

The younger babies have been having lots of fun with the sensory water mat. Pressing the mat to make the fish inside move in the water and watching the background picture change. The babies got nice and messy with paint when they painted their love hearts for our Love display.

During February, the toddlers, 2-3 years, have become really interested in dinosaurs! The children have been looking at various media, such as flash cards, books and watching clips on the tablet, of different dinosaurs and how they move. The children have then imitated what they had seen and used their imagination to stomp, jump and run like dinosaursThe children used paint to make dinosaur prints onto paper, looking at the different sizes of their feet.

The older toddlers made their very own vegetable Chinese curry for Chinese New Year. The children enjoyed cutting the vegetables up, talking about the different vegetables they were using and helping to stir it altogether to make their curry. The children had it for their tea and it was delicious! To develop the children’s fine motor skills, they have been using chopsticks to pick up items, such as dried noodles, and transfer them into their cooking bowls.

Lots of fun was also had with balloons when we decorated the room for Becki’s 30th Birthday. Happy Birthday Becki!

In the Pre School room this month, the children have enjoyed exploring their new computer. The children have really enjoyed using it and are becoming very confident in knowing how to control the mouse and to select which programme they would like to use.

Lots of creative artwork has been created with the children making Chinese fans with symbols on for Chinese New Year and making Valentine’s Day cards for their loved ones. At group time, the children have asked to play games and have taken an interest in playing snap; with the early years practitioners placing the cards down and the children looking out for the matching cards. They love to shout SNAP very loud!

What’s coming up in March

Spring is on its way! We plan to plant daffodil bulbs with the children in order to support Marie Curie Great Daffodil Appeal 2021. If anyone would like to donate to the appeal, please speak to a member of the staff team. World Book Day will be on Thursday 4th March. We invite everyone to come along to nursery dressed as your favourite story character. We will be reading our favourite stories and taking part in various activities to support reading on this day.

In March, we also celebrate Science Week on the week commencing the 8th March. The children will take part in various science experiments throughout the week. The children will also be making lots of beautiful creations for those special ladies in our lives for Mother’s Day.

On Friday 19th March, we invite everyone to wear red to take part in Red Nose Day. All donations welcome for this fantastic cause. Monday 22nd March is World Water Day. We will celebrate this with the children through lots of fun water activities.

Finally, on Monday 29th March, we will be celebrating Holi. The Hindu festival of Holi is a celebration of new beginnings.
