Welcome to August’s Newsletter, I hope you’re all having a wonderful summer holiday! Throughout the month we explored different topics from walking with dinosaurs, to flying through the sky like superman. Towards the end of the month, we all were super excited to celebrate Al-Hijra the Muslims New Year. Our favourite part of the month was music week, we stuck our dancing shoes on and cut some shapes to music from around the world.
To jump start the month we all jumped into our homemade time machine and turned back 66 million years! We walked among the dinosaurs! Through the week the children learnt about different types of dinosaurs and their names, and all about carnivores and herbivores, with some wonderful observations such as “A t-rex is a carnivore that eats other dinosaurs”. To support numeracy development the children looked closely at the sizes of the different dinosaurs and compared them to objects and buildings today. Did you know there were more than 700 different types of dinosaur? In the garden the children all became archaeologists preparing to discover dinosaur fossils and bones.
Once we returned to the 21st century, it was time to put our dancing shoes on. The children looked at different types of dancing from videos of tap, to ballroom, to ballet and contemporary, and focused closely on how different cultures dress and dance to music. To top off the week the practitioners demonstrated a variety of dance moves, which the children all loved copying, as well as some very fun musical chairs!
After dancing the week away we were met with our next topic of superheroes! During group time practitioners discussed all different types of superheroes, such as Spiderman, Batman and Ironman. However, the children learnt that not all superheroes wear capes, such as everyday superheroes from police officers to doctors. They spoken openly about the different people that help and protect us from harm. The children all loved dressing up in different role play and pretending to be these everyday heroes. This week was also National Tell a Joke Day, so we laughed away till our bellies hurt. The best joke of the day was “what did the left eye say to the right eye?……between us, something smells!”.
To round off the month of August it was time to celebrate the Muslim New Year called Al-Hijra. Over the week the children had discussions about the Muslim culture, their faiths, and beliefs. The main emphasis of Al-Hijri is reflection, remembrance and gratitude. Our main focus was Kakah which is all about helping others, as a group we then discussed how we can be kind towards others and help when needed.
What an educational and fun month we’ve had here at Stowmarket Preschool. For all our friends that have attended through the summer and heading off to school now, we wish you all the best and you will be missed, good luck!
Well well well…August is over, a new term will be starting! Let’s welcome September, and all the new children joining us from our nursery, we have a spectacular month planned!
What’s coming up next month
Through the month of September the children will be settling into their new rooms and learning their new routines!
10th – 19th, we will be celebrating the Hindu god Ganesh Chaturthi! Looking at multi cultural celebrations supports our development with British values and cultural capital, this is a great opportunity for us learn about different cultures, faiths and beliefs. Though the week we will be using playdough and clay to create our own interpretation of Ganesh. We will be reading stories and learning the life of the God Ganesh. We also will be looking closely at the different types of traditional food from India.
20th – 21st We need to prepare ourselves for another New Year! This time round we will be looking at the Jewish New Year. With this celebration we will be looking at supporting out Personal, Social and Emotional development, during group times we will be discussing what is important to us, and discussions about forgiveness.
22nd – 24th Our topic of the week is Pirates! “GRRRRRR!” throughout the week staff have different activities planned. Through the week the children will be able engage in pirate small world and role play and learn some pirate lingo! They will also be using their creative side by creating their own treasure maps. To top the week off, the children will have a treasure hunt to use their problem solving skills to find the buried treasure!
Week commencing the 27th will officially be in Autumn! Where has this year gone. To celebrate Autumn we will be planning various Autumn crafts from leaf printing to Autumn mobile making. Further into the week we will be having discussions about how the leaves will change over the next couple of months.
Though we have loads of exciting celebrations and topics planned through the month of September, each room have chosen an area of development to focus on for the month. In the Sunshine’s room the children will be focusing on our Personal, Social and Emotional Development. They will be carrying out group activities such as Yoga in the mornings to help clear minds and relax ready for the day (so we better practice our downward dog!). The children also will be talking about their emotions a lot through flash cards and stories. Meanwhile in the Pre-school room we will be starting our journey to School! I know it’s early but we need to start the preparations now. This month will be focusing on Literacy skills, practicing letter formation and writing. During group times the children will be using their beautiful singing voices to sing along to the phonics, and listen and speak about stories, how they are structured and how the characters are feeling.
