Welcome to our May newsletter! What a magnificent May it has been. We kick started the month by jumping in our rockets to space, moon walking from planet to planet. Throughout our fun packed month, we celebrated numeracy and literacy week in Pre-school. In the Sunshines room, we focused on various topics throughout the month; from animals “ROAR”, to transport “broom broom”, to pirates “AHOY there maties”. We finished off the month saying goodbye to Rosie, Alex, Daisy, Rex and Poppy (our butterflies).
At the beginning of May, we started the month with a “BOOM”, “ZOOM” and “CRASH”! It was Space Week! During the week, the Pre-school children explored different planets in the solar system. Through discussions with staff, the children unearthed some amazing facts about space! Did you know you can’t burp in space? And the sun is the largest object in the solar system! The best part of Space Week was junk modelling. The staff encouraged the children to use their imagination and create their own rockets. After visiting space and some extra-terrestrials beings, it was time to return to Earth. It was safe to say Space Week was out of this world!
In the Sunshines room, the children opened their own Zoo! The children focused their knowledge and learning on different animal groups, mainly mammals. They thoroughly enjoyed wearing animal masks and practicing their animal noises “ROAR”. During group times, the children discussed different animal facts. A favourite part of the week was creating beautiful paintings using animal footprints.
As May started drifting away, it was soon time for Sunshines to explore transport week. “All aboard!” CHOO CHOO! During the week, the children explored different activities that supported their Expressive Arts and Design. In the garden, they used their imagination to create cars and vehicles out of objects that the children found. Meanwhile, in the room, the children discussed and looked closely at different types of transport.
Through the middle of May, the Pre-school dedicated two weeks to numeracy and literacy. Within the first week, the children focused on shapes, addition and learning the names of 2D and 3D shapes. Towards the end of numeracy week, the team set the children the challenge of learning simple addition! The children used blocks and other objects to help them add together. Following on from numeracy week, the children swiftly moved on to literacy, where the children were encouraged to write their names and practice their letter formation.
Meanwhile in the Sunshines room, it was time to walk the plank! The staff created a scavenger hunt and encouraged the children to follow the clues to discover the hidden treasures. The children participated in lots of other theme activities from pirate small world, to creating their own hats, telescopes and pirate flags. To top off a great week, the children discovered a message inside a bottle.
As May started to come to an end and we prepare for June, we had to say goodbye to Rosie, Alex, Daisy, Rex and Poppy, our beautiful butterflies. Over the past 3 weeks, the children have been nurturing our caterpillars and watching them grow from small to big. The children all got very excited to watch them emerge from their cocoons and become beautiful butterflies. They ensured that they were waited on hand and foot by preparing fresh flowers and fruit for them to eat. A few days later, the children prepared to release them out in the garden to explore the world around. They were sad to see them go, but happy to see them fly off into the sky together.
What a magnificent month May has been!
