Stowmarket Nursery May News: Space, Numbers and Turtles

The Old Station Nursery Group - Creating Brighter Futures Together

Welcome all to our May newsletter. What a magical May it has been here at Sunhill Stowmarket Nursery! We started the month whooshing off to space, looking closely at our solar system and planets. Once we crash landed back on earth, we celebrated International Children’s Day. The children loved speaking about their friends, their emotions and how to treat others with kindness and respect. The month was packed full of fun and exciting activities for the children to expand our knowledge and development!

May news

The month started with a BANG! We all jumped in our rockets and jetted off to space.  Both rooms in nursery produced some fantastic and fun tuff trays looking closely at our solar system. Shooting stars also created some extra-terrestrial play-doh. Using the space play-doh mats, the children were encouraged to create their own aliens, rockets and meteors.

Once we crash landed back on Earth it was time to celebrate International Children’s Day. For the week, the children focused on their Personal, Social, Emotional Development. The children enjoyed discussing who their friends at nursery were. In addition, the children spent some time discussing how they can treat their friends and others with kindness and respect.

As May started zooming by, we came to International Numeracy Day. The children in Twinkle stars participated in various counting activities, supporting the children’s numeracy development. While building towers with the staff members, the children were encouraged to count the blocks. Although, the children loved pushing them over and watching them crash! In the Shooting Stars room, the staff supported the children’s learning with colour sorting activities as well as categorising size and shapes.

As May comes to an end, we all got excited to take part in World Turtle Day! Throughout the day, the children explored different information books about the oceans and creatures of the deep. The children laughed when they heard what noise a whale makes! To complete the day, the children explored the sea world small world! They children loved splashing in the water with the toy animals.

Throughout the month of May, the staff planned different activities to focus on different areas of development. As loads of the children are currently learning to crawl and walk, the Twinkle Stars room focused the month on the children’s physical development. They loved using the garden room to practice their crawling and walking. The walkers have got to be the best part! In addition, the Shooting Stars room focused on our Numeracy skills. The children practiced everything from counting to colour sorting and even matching games.

What a magical month May has been for us all!

What’s coming up next month

The weather through May has been chilly and a little miserable; however that doesn’t stop us from having FUN! Lets all prepare ourselves for SUMMER! It’s finally here! Through the month of June, we can’t wait to carry out and look at a number of different celebrations and festivals.

On the 1st June, it is Dinosaur Day! The children will explore this special day through the dinosaur small world and a number of books. If you have any books at home about dinosaurs, please do bring them so that the children can explore them together.

On the 5th June, the children will be celebrating International Environment Day. Throughout the week, the staff will plan exciting walks to the museum and preschool garden. We will be carrying out a bug hunt for the children and getting all hands a bit dirty in the mud!

The 20th June is Father’s Day. For this, the children will be creating Father’s Day cards for their dads and other special people in their lives. We wish we could carry out a stay and play but unfortunately this has had to be cancelled due to COVID.

On the 21st June, the children will  dancing and celebrating International Music Day. The staff will encourage the children to play instruments to beats of music.  The last celebration of the month is Children’s Art Week. The children will be encouraged to use their artistic sides to take part in various creative activities, from cutting and sticking to painting.

Throughout the month of June, the Twinkle stars will be promoting the children’s Personal, Social, Emotional development. The children will be using mirrors to notice key facial features, and staff will speak about their emotions and the emotions of others. In the Shooting Stars room, we will be focusing on the children’s understanding of the world. They will be looking into the community and the people who care for us. Most of all, we can’t wait to visit our local town to see the various types of people in our community! To top it all off, the children will explore different types of occupations, from doctors to teachers.

Other important information

A small reminder that it is bank holiday on Monday 31st May and the nursery will be closed.

Thank you all for your continued support.
