Welcome to our April newsletter! What an amazing April we have had at Sunhill Stowmarket Nursery.
All the children in nursery kick started the month by eating far too much chocolate and celebrating Easter!
The children in Shooting Stars practiced their culinary skills by baking cookies and buns as part of their Easter celebration. Safe to say, the children were more excited about eating them rather than the baking process itself! The children in Twinkle Stars practiced their whole hand grasp and tripod grasp while using pens and pencils to create some beautiful Easter masterpieces.
We swiftly moved over to celebrating International Wildlife Day. For the whole week, we spoke with the children about about different types of bugs and insects, and the children explored their very own Bug-ingham Palace. Most of the children loved the spiders and they now know that they have 8 legs! The children also went on a few walks to enjoy the sunshine as well as to discover live bugs hiding in the soil and bug hotels in the museum.
As the weeks zoomed passed us, it soon came to Ramadan. We explored the Muslim festival with the children, looking at the culture, food and families. To further the children’s development, the team talked and showed the group pictures of the children’s families, so that they could also discuss the different types of families and how we all are different. To finish off the celebration, we discussed with the children how people dress, looking closely at pictures. One of the children’s favourite parts of learning about Ramadan was trying some Islamic cuisines; the fruity chicken curry was lovely.
Towards the end of this month, it was time to celebrate Her Majesty’s 95th birthday. The only way we could possibly celebrate this was by holding our very own vintage tea and teddy bear’s picnic. In the Shooting Stars room, the children created their very own crowns, in red, white and blue. The children also participated in some sandwich making in preparation for the tea party. In the Twinkle Stars, the children explored the tuff tray which was filled with various play food and drink.
To finish off the month of April, the children dressed like princesses and knights to celebrate St George’s Day. During morning time, the team told the children the story of St George. They especially liked hearing about the dragon and how St George saved the day. The children also thoroughly enjoyed exploring the knights and castles small world.
Alongside the many celebrations in nursery, throughout the month of April, the Shooting Stars have also been focusing on messy play to improve their development. The children have really enjoyed building sandcastles and getting messy in the gloop. Best of all, the children have loved body painting this month! The children all got really messy creating footprints in the paint, even the staff joined in too!
The Twinkle Stars have focused on developing communication and language skills this month. During group times, the children have enjoyed singing songs. They were encouraged to carry out the Makaton signs, their favourite was “ba ba black sheep”.
What an amazing month April has been!
What’s coming up next month
April showers brings May flowers. Let’s all get excited, one more step closer to summer! Throughout the month of May, we are excited to carry out and look at even more celebrations and festivals. The week commencing the 3rd May, we are ‘over the moon’ to celebrate International Space Day! We have activities planned for the children from making their own rockets and space role play to out of the world tuff trays.
On the 18th May we need to prepare ourselves for International Children’s Day. We’re looking forward to talking to the children about friendship groups and how we treat people with kindness and respect. Most of all, we will be looking closely at our emotions, and how to communicate these to others. We will also use our democracy within British values to help support the children with their decision making.
The week commencing the 19th May, we look forward to celebrating International Numeracy Day. Both rooms will be carrying out various different numeracy activities that will support the children’s development. Throughout the day, we’ll focus on the areas within the EYFS; these are shape, space and measures, and numbers.
On the 23rd May, we are enthusiastic to take part in World Turtle Day. For this event, the children will be playing and exploring the sea small world as well as information books about our oceans and creatures of the deep.
Throughout the month of May, the children in the shooting stars room will be focusing on numeracy skills; practicing their counting skills, colour sorting and shape matching. In twinkle stars, the children will be focusing on their physical development, as most of the children are just starting to crawl and walk. The team are planning loads of physical activities where physical development is promoted.
