Peckham April News: Easter, Baking and Minibeasts

Peckham April

Welcome to our monthly newsletter! We welcomed our term time only children back from their half term holidays last week, we hope you all had a lovely Easter break. The Summer term is usually our busiest in the nursery calendar, with the weather improving and lots of lovely learning opportunities for the children.

April news

This month, the children across the nursery celebrated Easter by participating in an Easter egg hunt, making cards and creating flowers. The children also celebrated Ramadan in April where the children learned about Ramadan, Muslim habits throughout Ramadan and why they fast.

Throughout April, we started introducing sand play, water play and messy play to the babies, taking into consideration the safety measures before and after each activity. The children loved the sand texture and learnt how to dig in the sand to find hidden objects. This month, the babies have also enjoyed playing with shredded paper, with snakes and minibeasts hidden in it.

This month in the Sunshine room, the children have been learning about transitions; some of the children’s families are expecting new babies while some of the children’s friends in the room have moved to the Pre-school room. The children have started using the emotion cards during group time so that they are able to learn about how to express their feelings. The group have also watched a video this month about feelings and how changes in life might make them feel.

It was the Sunshine room’s turn this month for the Nursery Chef to visit. He introduced the children to some new cooking activities and taught the children how to make biscuits. The children made these around Easter and so these became special Easter biscuits!

During April in the Pre-school room, the children have been learning about minibeasts. They learnt the names of different insects and the team extended the children’s learning on a visit to the park where the children were able to look for minibeasts. The children went to the park equipped with their magnifying glasses and the team carefully picked up some insects for the children to investigate fully.

During their visit to the park, the children noticed the different flowers on the trees. They collected branches from the park so that when the children returned to nursery, they used different colour playdough to make flowers to go on the branches. The children hung the flowers on the branches and made a beautiful tree.

What’s coming up next month

Next month, we will be celebrating Eid al-Fitr. The children will be participating in a number of different activities to help extend their understanding of this event.

We are also celebrating International Family Day for the whole week from the 17th May. We will be sharing family photos and books about family life.

We are also planning to have some picnics and spend even more time outdoors, enjoying the nice weather. Let’s hope the nice weather continues!
