Oxford January News: Burns Night, Monkey Puzzle and Arctic Animals

The Old Station Nursery Group - Creating Brighter Futures Together

January news

It has been a busy month here at nursery!

In Babies, we have loved seeing all of your lovely photos from the Christmas and festive period and looking at these together with the children.

The children have been enjoying activities throughout January associated with the Big Schools Birdwatch. This has involved looking at real life pictures of birds, making bird feeders and designing our own birds. The children have  also enjoyed activities focused on  Burns Night; particularly enjoyed by Sarah as she was able to celebrate her Scottish heritage with the children

Over in Toddlers this month, the children have had such a busy January; settling back in to nursery life and telling all of their friends about their visit from Santa! This month, the toddlers have been learning all about ‘Monkey Puzzle’.  The children wanted to read the story so many times, that they are now quite proficient at the repetitive phrases and can even tell you what will happen next.

The children also designed their own Monkey Puzzle display board, creating a tree trunk and all the wonderful animals featured in the story. They have also been learning all about self-help routines, such as washing and dressing, and how to care for others. The dolls have been sparkly clean and very well looked after!

This month, Pre-school have been learning all about winter and habitats, specifically arctic animals. The children were so fascinated by the penguins, they created their own habitat, built igloo shelters and watched a real-life short penguin clip by David Attenborough. The pre-schoolers have also been creating their own designed snowflakes and talking about the frosty mornings here in England.

What’s coming up in February

There is much to look forward to during February!

We are looking forward to a creative February with the babies. Including arts,  crafts and sensory activities for Valentine’s Day which the children will be able to share with their loved ones. Throughout February, the children will also be celebrating Chinese New Year, Pancake Day and National Storytelling Week. It is going to be a busy month, full of lots of engaging activities.

Throughout February, the Toddlers will be following their interest of looking after others and discovering Owl babies; as well as celebrating events such as Pancake Day and Valentine’s Day. The children in Pre-school will also be celebrating Chinese New Year and learning about Chinese culture; as well as Pancake Day and Valentine’s Day.  Next month, the children will also be exploring planting and growing. They will be looking at some seeds and bulbs before planting them, watching them change and grow, before finding them a home in the garden.

Other important information
