Mottershead Drive January News: Forest School, Science Experiments and Burns Night

The Old Station Nursery Group - Creating Brighter Futures Together

January news

Welcome back to all of our families returning from the Christmas break. Thank you for all of the lovely gifts/chocolates/goody bags sent in, it really was extremely kind and generous, and very much appreciated by all of the staff. We were thoroughly spoiled!

This month, the younger children at Mottershead Drive have been busy exploring our wonderful Forest School. This environment provides all of our children with the opportunity to experiment, climb, risk take and seek adventure in a wonderful outdoor space. The children have had a lot of fun exploring – no matter the weather!

The whole team have created some lovely messy play activities, inviting all groups to explore the sensory materials. By providing additional resources to the activity, the children were able to use their imagination and extend the sessions.

Throughout January, the preschool children used vinegar and bicarbonate of soda to make volcanoes. They discussed which sized cylinders would work best, which turned out to be the smaller cylinders. The explosive larva was amazing! The children thoroughly enjoyed the science experiment so, following on from their interest, the whole 2-4 group watched as we experimented again; putting kitchen roll between cups of coloured water to see if they would mix together. The children used pipettes to mix the colours together and discussed which colours they could make by mixing them together.

As a whole nursery, Mottershead Drive is very health conscious and always promotes healthy eating. For snack times, we always offer a wide range of fruit or vegetable to all of our children. We also try to promote this in a variety of different ways. This month, the 0-2 group dressed as budding chefs, making delicious and exotic fruit kebabs. The 2-4 group enjoyed mixing cooking and technology, making fruit smoothies with the blender; learning some new words such as, electricity, blending and even antioxidant.

Towards the end of this month, we have also celebrated a very important Scottish celebration. The 25th January marked the birthday of one of Scotland’s important cultural icons, Robert Burns. Robert Burns was one of Scotland’s national poets and was well known among experts around the world. Burns Night is celebrated by relatives and friends coming together to have a Burns Supper in honor of Robert Burns. To mark this occasion, the children have enjoyed a delicious haggis dinner with neeps and tatties and cranachan for pudding. Everyone danced the highland fling to authentic Scottish music, designed their own individual Lochness monsters, decorated the Scottish flags and finished the day off with tasty cock-a-leekie soup and shortbread for pudding.

What’s coming up in February

In February, Mottershead Drive has an array of activities and festivals to celebrate. From Chinese New Year, National Storytelling Week and Childrens Metal Health Week to Valentine’s Day and Pancake Day; we have lot to look forward to and take part in. To see photos from all of the exciting activities that take place at Mottershead Drive, please take a look at our Facebook and our Instagram page.

Other important information

I would like to take this opportunity to also thank all of our parents for the continued support during such difficult coronavirus circumstances. I am happy to say the nursery has remained open and staff, as always, are eager to continue supporting the children and families. All of our parents continue to social distance and wear face mask when dropping off and collecting their children. It can sometimes be difficult for parents to have more in depth conversations when at handing over times, especially now that you are unable to access the building. Please be reassured that anytime you need to talk, myself and all key carers are available to contact by telephone or we can arrange a suitable time for a Zoom call.

We know that our fantastic families are always recommending us to their friends, so we want to say a big thank you for your referrals! As of Saturday 23rd January 2021, when you refer a friend and they join the nursery, we would like to thank you with a £100 credit off your next invoice. We know you have lots of friends so there is no limit! We are always very grateful for your support and look forward to welcoming more of your friends into our nursery family! Terms and conditions apply so please speak with me to check these.
