Welcome to our February newsletter. I hope our term time children had a fabulous half term and enjoyed some time at home! Our children that attend all year round enjoyed all of the exciting activities on offer at Mottershead Drive, especially Pancake Day!
There has been so many celebrations in February; Chinese New Year, Valentine’s Day and Pancake Day to name just a few!
The children enjoyed National Storytelling Week where the younger group in nursery enjoyed telling and sharing stories such as ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ and ‘Goldilocks and the 3 Bears’. The children were then invited to utilise resources that supported the stories and extend their learning. The puppet show was a great way to showcase stories visually without using books and the children loved exploring the theatre and puppets.
Children’s Mental Health Week took place at the very beginning of the month. At Mottershead Drive, we recognise that the emotional wellbeing of children is just as important as their physical health, especially with the current Covid pandemic and the effects it could potentially have on our children. Good mental health allows children and young people to develop the resilience to cope with whatever life throws at them and grow into well-rounded, healthy adults.
Each week at nursery, we hold mindfulness, meditation and yoga sessions and we put a real focus on these throughout Children’s Mental Health Week to emphasise these activities even more. The children took part in small group time mindfulness discussions, where they were able to listen, talk, and, very importantly, be heard. The nursery team also incorporated a 5-minute meditation session throughout the day, where the children were able to take stock, re-balance and prepare for a fun-filled day at nursery. The children also participated in yoga sessions, as these exercises are shown to not only increases strength and flexibility but can also reduce symptoms of stress, depression, and anxiety.
What would February be, without celebrating Pancake Day! Last week, we celebrated Shrove Tuesday in nursery and planned a full day of activities centered around pancakes. The children engaged in a playdough pancake activity where the team were able to demonstrate how to use whisks, spatulas, pots and pans whilst the children imitated; exploring the utensils and flipping their pancakes. For tea, everyone enjoyed tucking in to delicious warm pancakes with a choice of syrup, natural honey and a fresh fruit assortment.
What’s coming up in March
March is another exciting and busy month. We look forward to investigating British Science Week, celebrating Mother’s Day and St Patrick’s Day, raising money for Comic Relief and honouring Holi. Holi is an ancient Hindu festival which heralds the arrival of Spring after Winter.
