November seems to have flown by here at Houlton in a whirlwind of fireworks and fun.
The children have really enjoyed sharing their celebrations of Bonfire Night and Diwali and it’s been lovely to extend their natural enthusiasm for these events at preschool – even if not everyone enjoys glitter to the same extent that the children do!
They have also shown respect and reflection when exploring Armistice Day as well as enjoying raising money for Children in Need by dressing up and taking part in our ladybird hunt. Even now, we can’t take the ladybirds down from the classroom because the children still insist on finding them all!
We have also been supporting children’s awareness and knowledge of nursery rhymes as part of World Nursery Rhyme Week 2020. The children enjoyed developing their number recognition and the concept of ‘one more’ when building a clock to run up in the outdoor classroom. They also built a giant spiders web for Incy Wincy and were supported in pretending to be Miss Polly with her sick dolly to help with their sequencing. To help develop children’s confidence with rhyming, we’ve created a nursery rhyme area to replace the ‘Autumn’ shelves, where preschool children can access props for a variety of songs throughout the week.
What’s coming up in December
There’s plenty to look forward to in December and that’s before we even get started on Christmas activities!
From the beginning of the month, Ellie and Carly have planned to turn part of the Corner House into a Corner Shop so that children can see more numerical print in the environment and use real coins in their play to support their counting skills and mathematical thinking.
We will be getting a delivery of our real Christmas tree early in December and the children will learn all about how to care for it as well as starting to create an abundance of decorations for its branches. We have already started our visual timeline which counts down to Christmas Eve as well as some important birthdays on the way; so don’t be surprised if your child comes home suddenly saying “It’s Thursday and there are 29 more sleeps until Christmas!”.
We will also be taking part in The Old Station Nursery Group Christmas Advent Challenge. Each day in the lead up to Christmas, one nursery within the group will take part in a Christmas challenge and post a photo or video to our social media channels. We welcome parents to join in; tag us and use the hashtag #OSNAdventChallenge. For more information, take a look at our social media channels!
Other important information
Information about the date and time of the children’s Christmas party and Christmas Jumper day will be sent to parents next week, so please look out for this communication.
Term ends on Friday 18th December for children with a term time only contract and then begins again on the 5th January 2021. Wishing a peaceful and joyous holiday period to all of our families.
