The Preschool children have really enjoyed being in their new, larger classroom this month and have begun to make it their own with the emerging Art Gallery being installed on the walls after we celebrated Children’s Art week. We’re trying different layouts in the space and taking feedback from the children about what they like to play with and where, so that they develop ownership of the classroom and their learning.
We’ve had a lovely, if different, end to the school year, celebrating with a socially distanced picnic with King Class. The children had the opportunity to talk about their favourite parts of preschool and the things that they like to do at home with their families as well as ask questions about what ‘big’ school is like! The children impressed everyone with their listening and their super manners. The children also found it fun to spot their friends who used to be with them in nursery last year.
What’s coming up in August
Now that it is the Summer Holidays, building work has started on the new all-weather canopy in our outdoor classroom. Although this means that we don’t have free flow access to our outdoor area for the next few weeks, we will be making the most of using the school playground, playing fields and Wild School Area. The children have also found it really fun watching the different machines that are being used to build the canopy. So far they’ve seen a circular saw, a jack hammer, and a small low loader. Work should be finished in time for the new term and it will mean that we will be more protected from the elements during our outdoor learning times.
Because we have access to all of the school grounds, we are encouraging parents to bring their child’s bike or scooter to preschool with them. National Cycle to Work Day is on the 6th August and we would love to help promote this healthly lifestyle by exploring ways to cycle and scoot safely and in a controlled way, using the space on the school playground.
For all those children who are soon to leave us to go to Primary School, we wish you the very best of times and thank you all for the fabulous memories you have helped to create here at Houlton!
