It’s been lovely to have the children come back from their Christmas break, full of excitement and enthusiasm for their learning. Our new families have settled in so well, it feels like the children have been here the whole time!
January has seen the children in Preschool have lots of opportunities to explore and investigate creatures great and small. They have loved role playing in The Old Station Nursery Vets Practice; caring for our Guinea Pigs, Charlie and Lola; being introduced to Gary, Rachel’s Giant African Land Snail; and participating in the RSPB’s Big Schools Bird Watch campaign after making their own bird feeders.
We have had a sprinkling of snow here in Houlton and the children were able to make the most of it by donning their wellies and waterproofs for an adventure in Wild School. It was a brilliant chance for them to witness icicles first hand and discover how they form from snow and water, melting and freezing. They also tried snow painting, creating beautiful temporary masterpieces on the benches!
Our most popular learning challenge this month has had to be the one set by Alf the Elf, as he disappeared back to the North Pole. Alf left the preschool children a letter, asking the children to help him build some igloos for his penguin friends. He sent them supplies of sugar cubes, cotton wool, lollipop sticks and cotton buds to use. The children used their STEM skills to determine the best way to construct stable igloos for the penguins. We definitely have some budding engineers here at Houlton!
What’s coming up in February
In February, we hope that the weather provides opportunities to allow us to continue our investigations into wildlife and the season of winter. The preschool children will be creating some hibernation stations to take up to Wild School and experimenting with how to create their own icicles and frozen cobwebs in our outdoor classroom.
Bev will be continuing her sewing activities with the preschool children, as they have been so very excited to learn how to use the sewing machine carefully and safely. The children have been developing good motor control using the foot pedal. They are all incredibly proud of their emotion bean bags that they have created so far!
On Tuesday 16th February, we will be celebrating Shrove Tuesday with the children in Preschool and Angels Holiday Club by having a special Pancake breakfast, followed by Pancake Day races and a pancake flipping challenge. Who will be this year’s champion?! If you don’t normally attend during half term, your child can join in with the pancake flipping challenge at home and let us know how they got on through Eylog!
