Houlton December News: Christmas Songs, Writing Letters and New Books

The Old Station Nursery Group - Creating Brighter Futures Together

December news

We’ve had a fabulous December in Preschool at Houlton!

The children have enjoyed preparing the classroom with festive decorations, including creating their own Nativity scene in the window. They have engaged in lots of activities to enhance their creative development and motor skills, with baubles, calendars and cards with lots (and lots!!) of sequins! The children have learned a brand new Christmas song about Christmas Angels and are all confident to sign along to the song in Makaton as well.

We have never seen the children more excited or motivated to write than when creating their letters to Santa. They braved the endless rain to put them in the post box in Houlton. We’re eagerly awaiting his reply!

Each morning, there has been a new gift left under our Christmas tree in the classroom which has been a new Christmas themed book. The children have enjoyed the wide range of texts, from poetry, to comic books, traditional Christmas tales and lift the flap stories. Their favourite so far has to be ‘Father Christmas Needs a Wee’.

‘The Everything Shop’ role play area has been a real hit with the children, with the most popular item on sale being ‘cat food’ and ‘lollipops’. Children have been using more mathematical language in their play and making mathematical marks for price tags and receipts. After Christmas, we’re going to change the role play area into a ‘Vets’ as we have a few children who have had new pets recently and we want to support their interest with this.

What’s coming up in January

In January, we will be using of the cold weather to make scientific investigations into ice. Investigating the time it takes for things to melt and to freeze. This will build upon the children’s previous learning where they measured periods of time in the number of sleeps as they counted down to birthdays, parties and Christmas day.

We will also be celebrating ‘Winnie the Pooh Day’ with the children on the 18th January; where the children will listen to tales about Winnie the Pooh and make their own honey sandwiches to have as a picnic.

Other important information

The deadline to apply for a primary school place is fast approaching. To apply in time, applications must be submitted by the 15th January 2021. Please click here to apply online.

A reminder to parents that the 4th of January is a teacher training day, with term starting back on the 5th January

And finally, we would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a peaceful New Year.
