Heath Mill January News: Reading, Animals and Language Development

HM-Snow

January news

Heath Mill nursery have had a big focus this month on reading; we have celebrated both Winnie the Pooh Day and National Reading Day. The children and staff have enjoyed sharing lots of different stories together and explored some new books that we hadn’t heard before as well as some old favourites too.

This month, the Babies have been exploring different objects in the activity spot and parachute to help support their language development. They have been practicing naming the different objects, such as animals and transport items, and talking about the sounds that they make.

The Toddlers have been learning all about what makes them unique. They have discussed how there are differences and similarities between themselves and others and have also been learning about how their family groups differ too. The group have enjoyed sharing family photographs with their friends and naming all of the people that are special to them.

Throughout January, the children in Preschool have been learning all about cold places and have been experimenting in building their own igloos. They have also learned about the different animals that live in cold countries. This theme has run through all areas of the children’s learning and they have used their discussions and activities to enhance their maths and literacy skills as well.

What’s coming up in February

During February, everyone in the setting will be taking part in activities in order to help raise money for Children’s Heart Surgery Fund Wear Red Day on Friday 5th February. We shall also be celebrating Chinese New Year and exploring some traditional Chinese foods and customs.

The Babies will be starting to look at photographs of their families and learning all about who is special to them. The Toddlers have got an exciting new reading forest to explore and will be focusing on a ‘book of the week’ each week throughout February. The children in Preschool will be looking into Chinese customs in more detail and using tools, such as chopsticks, to help with their fine motor skills and pencil control.

We are looking forward to welcoming Nasmin to our team from March, who will be working with our under 2’s on a Tuesday to Friday each week.  At present, we are also seeking an additional member of support staff to cover any annual leave due to an increase in bookings.
