Heath Mill December News: Exploring Textures, Mathematical Activities and Writing Letters

The Old Station Nursery Group - Creating Brighter Futures Together

December news

We have had a very busy month here at Heath Mill and we have had lots of fun celebrating Christmas, even though it is a bit different than usual!

The children had a virtual visit from Santa, got dressed up in their festive clothing and have taken part in lots of lovely festive crafts. Our Nursery Cook cooked us a lovely Christmas dinner which the children thoroughly enjoyed.

This month, the under 2s have been having lots of fun exploring new textures and medias, including edible snow, ice play and tinsel play. They have used all of their senses to explore these new medias and materials and have thoroughly enjoyed getting very messy!!

The toddlers have been developing their mathematical skills by taking part in lots of mathematical activities and, of course, keeping to the festive theme. The children have been going on shape hunts both inside and outside in the garden, looking for the festive shapes that the practitioners made. This helped to develop the children’s shape recognition and show an interest in shapes in the environment.

The Pre-school children have had lots of fun developing their fine motor skills this month as well as practicing their pencil control by creating lots of lovely festive pictures and, of course, writing their letters to Santa!

What’s coming up in January

On Monday 18th January, we will be celebrating ‘Winnie the Pooh Day’ here at nursery. The children will be able to come into nursery dressed as their favourite Winnie the Pooh character and take part in lots of hunny’ related activities.

Friday 22nd January is ‘National Reading Day’. To celebrate this event, the children will be looking at lots of different books and reading as many of their favourite stories as possible.

The practitioners in our under 2s will be working throughout January on settling the babies back into nursery after the Christmas break. They will also be focusing on their communication and language, looking at using props with stories and nursery rhymes, encouraging the children to join in and copy the actions.

The children in the toddler room will be looking people and communities. Looking at children’s family photos and different religions as well as occupations. The children will also be looking at the similarities and differences between each other by doing some self-portraits.

In Pre-school, the children will be looking at all things Antarctic! They will be working together to build their very own igloo using milk bottles! They will be exploring ice and looking at the changes that happen over time.

Other important information

Nursery reopens on Monday 4th January 2021. We can’t wait to hear about the children’s Christmas breaks!

We would like to thank all of our parents for your continued support and understanding with what has been a very strange and testing year for us all.

We hope that you all have a lovely Christmas and will look forward to seeing you all in the New Year!
