Welcome to Harpole Day Nursery’s May newsletter. We have had a very busy month, with the children taking part in lots of exciting activities.
This month, the preschool room became home to an incubator filled with ten eggs. All of the children throughout the nursery have been watching and waiting for the eggs to hatch. During the first bank holiday weekend, Lauren took the incubator home and we were lucky enough to have one of the eggs hatch, ready for the children to see once they came back from their long weekend. Lauren named our little nursery chick ‘Woody’.
The children in the Ducks room have been exploring the new natural resources in the room this month, showing a keen interest in handling the resources. This has given the children the perfect opportunity to establish their turn taking skills. The Ducks have also been demonstrating their creative skills this month, creating chick pictures after meeting our nursery chick, Woody.
Throughout May, the children in Bears have been using their hands to paint with. The children have been concentrating as they paint their own hands, with some of them commenting on how the paint feels and the temperature of the paint. The Bears have also been accessing various problem solving resources, paying a lot of attention on how they need to operate them to get the end result they require.
The preschoolers have been using the loose parts to create various structures to keep their animals safe this month, working together in groups and talking through their ideas to ensure their creations are sturdy and won’t fall. The preschool children have also used May’s rainy days as a good excuse to do some baking together, making themselves and their families some shortbread. The children have then extended this activity into role playing with the playdough, rolling out their ‘shortbread’ and cutting the shapes they chose, recalling each step correctly and telling each other what they are doing.
What’s coming up next month
We are looking forward to celebrating various special days with the children during June. The 1st of June is both Dinosaur Day and Butterfly Awareness Day. We will be celebrating both and the children will be engaging in a number of activities to help extend their learning. We will also be celebrating Bike Week from the 5th to the 13th June and the Queen’s birthday on the 12th. And, of course, not forgetting Father’s Day on the 20th. June is set to be another busy month!
