Fen Drayton May News: Mud, Chickens and Space

The Old Station Nursery Group - Creating Brighter Futures Together

Welcome to May’s Newsletter! We have had a busy month welcoming some new babies to the nursery, who are all settling in wonderfully. This month, we also had our nursery photo and the school leaver’s have had their photos too. This is always such a lovely occasion and a great memory to look back on.

May news

This month, the children had a chicken come and visit! The children had a chance to hold or stroke the chicken, whichever the children felt more comfortable doing. The children were careful with the chicken and took an interested in what the chicken was doing and eating.

Throughout May, the children in Stars and Sunbeams have had fun exploring different types of messy play in the tuff trays. The children have enjoyed exploring blossom and rice, and the older children in Sunbeams talked about the smell and how it feet. The children used different toys when playing with this to see what marks or trails they left in the blossom and rice.

This month, the children have also been exploring what happens when they mix things together. They have been exploring mixing mud and water together as well as sand and water together. The children made mud pies in the mud kitchen and discovered that adding water to the sand helped them to make better sandcastles.

The rain has provided a lot of fun at nursery during May and the children had great fun putting their wellies on and jumping in the muddy puddles.

This month, the children have focused on pouring as their Montessori activity. All of the children have been practising during play and mealtimes. Some of our younger children can now pour their drink and can use the little glasses at mealtimes.

In preschool this month, the children have enjoyed celebrating Space Day by dressing up and learning about the different planets. The children also made biscuits, shaping them like stars, moons and rockets.

With the warmer weather at the beginning of the month, the children had loads of fun with water play in the garden, using the paddling pool, spray bottles and the hose. Later through the month, the children have played in the rain, splashing in puddles, and making muddy soup in the mud kitchen.

In May, the children have shown an interest in malleable play and so we have followed this interest and made play dough, gloop, and moon sand.

We received an update from our friend that we sponsor in Haiti and the children helped to write a letter to her. They also drew her lots of pictures that we could send. The children also practiced their letter formation by writing her name on their artwork.

In Phonics this month, the children have been finding objects around the room beginning with each letter and practised letter formation with the sandpaper letters.

What’s coming up next month

June is set to be another busy month! The children will be celebrating Dinosaur Day on the 1st of June with a day filled ull of dinosaur fun and activities. They will also be celebrating the Queen’s birthday on the 12th of June and are going to make cards. The children will then have a Queen’s party tea!

The children will also be getting creative next month by making some special cards in time for Father’s Day on the 20th June. Also at the end of the month, the children will have some fun when Wimbledon starts. They will be participating in some tennis games in the garden.

Finally, also at the end of the month, the children will be taking part in Art Week. The children will have fun with all of the different arts and craft resources that we have at nursery.

Other important information

Please can we ask for named sunhats and sun cream to come to nursery as we have started having some nice weather and the sun can get strong quickly.

To all school leavers, if you haven’t already, can you please let us know the leaving date for your child/children. Also, can you let us know if you are planning on using the holiday club.

A small reminder that it is bank holiday on Monday 31st May and the nursery will be closed.

Thank you for your continued support.
