Welcome to our May newsletter. What a busy month we have had. A very warm welcome to all of our new families that joined us this month!
This month, the Twinkle Star children have enjoyed being outside in the garden, experiencing the ever changing weather this month has brought. The children’s topic has been ‘Nature’ and the children have been watching birds out of the window and joining in with bug hunts in the big garden to discover what mini-beasts live outside.
Inside, they’ve painted bugs and flowers, and helped the snails move houses into newer and bigger tanks. They’ve also displayed a keen interest in action songs such as “If You’re Happy and You Know It” and “The Cheeky Monkey Song”. The children love to join in with words and actions when hearing the team sing. The children have also begun circle time in the mornings this month to help support our older children when they move to Sunbeams, as well as providing a structured routine for all of the children.
Throughout May in Sunbeams, the children have been exploring the garden in search of the different insects they could find; questioning what they are called and demonstrating number recognition in regards to how many they could see, how many legs they had etc. Some of the children weren’t afraid to pick them up, others shouted out “yuk” and ran away!
Also in the big garden, the children have been focusing on physical development. The team have been encouraging the children to climb the steps to the climbing frame, join in physical games and use open ended resources, such as planks of wood, guttering and tyres, to make an obstacle course. This builds on the children’s muscles and their hand eye coordination.
The children have also been enjoying the new resources in the room this month, with the EYPP (Early Years Pupil Premium) money we sourced a light table to help the children with sensory experiences. This has been very popular with the children as we can add water and all different types of materials to it. We can even change the colour! This has engaged the children for long periods of time. We are also waiting for a new climbing apparatus to arrive which will a great addition to the garden for the children to get lots of enjoyment out of.
In May, the children in Pre-school enjoyed a change of scenery as they had a teddy bears picnic at the local park! The children were super lucky as the rain held off for a few hours! The children spoke about their teddy bears which promoted the children’s communication and language skills. The children helped prepare their packed lunch for the picnic which the children spoke about healthy eating and why it is good to have a balanced diet. This also helped the children to use their fine motor skills when using one handed tools to make their sandwiches.
Throughout May in Pre-school, the children have been continuing with their school transition by visiting Braiswick Primary School. For the first time, the children were able to explore the Reception classroom (Reception children were on a welly walk!) where they spotted some butterflies and enjoyed exploring the resources from inside the classroom. We are currently awaiting a date from the school for when the children will go up to Reception’s rehearsal for Sports Day and the children will be able to see what they will experience next year.
This month, we have also been supporting the children’s sounds and writing skills as lots of children have recently shown an interest in writing their own name! If you would like any support for this at home, please let one of the Pre-school team know and they will support.
Also this month, the children have been fascinated with bugs and insects as we have come across a lot of daddy long legs, ants, centipedes etc. The children have been discussing about their shape and size as well as any patterns they spotted on them.
What’s coming up next month
We are hoping for some more sunshine as we head into June so that the children can continue to spend as much time as possible outside, exploring our outdoor areas. As well as the usual fun and interactive activities throughout the month, the children will be celebrating some special events in June such as Father’s Day on the 20th June.
Next month, the Twinkle Stars will be splitting the topic into two sections; firstly, the children will be looking at ‘Animals’ and engaging in lots of fun activities and games; as well as letting the children have their own say on zoo experiences. With Father’s Day coming up towards the end of the month, the children will also be looking at those important people in their lives and in their families.
Next month, the Sunbeams team will be taking small groups of children to the Pre-school room to help them with the transition to the room in September. They will also be learning more about the outdoor environment and extending the children’s learning about bugs. We are hoping to have a dress up day for the Cracker Jack Charity which supports Children living with a Disability. We will also be celebrating World Ocean Day and Children’s Art Week.
In Pre-school, we are going to be doing sound of the week, so in the first week of June, we will begin with S. We are asking children to bring something in beginning with the sound S and place it in a box so we can do show and tell during circle time.
We are supporting the Pre-school children in a variety of ways to support each child in their own unique way to ensure they are school ready and we will be doing a variety of activities as well as getting in touch with the schools that your child/REM have got into! As mentioned previously, as long as we can regarding COVID, we will be having a graduation on the last day of term!
