Apricot Preschool February News: Baking, Space and Creative Skills

APR-PRE-1-e1614080185128

A big welcome to all of our new children that have started with us this month. We are really pleased at how well the children have settled in and we are looking forward to seeing more of their personalities shine over the next couple of weeks.

February news

It’s been a busy month at our Preschool! Not only have we celebrated Valentine’s Day, Chinese New Year and Shrove Tuesday, we have seen the children really engaged in lots of inspiring activities that the practitioners have planned for them.

In Preschool 1, the children have been doing lots of baking, looking at how to measure items. They have used the scales and measuring stick to make biscuits for tea, chocolate gingerbread and Valentines biscuits.

The children have also done some artwork of the people they love and who are special to them. It has been lovely to hear all the lovely things the children have said about the people in their lives. They have used their creative skills to draw that special person/people, which has also helped the children to create shapes based on a particular part of their special person and use colour to enhance the meaning of the picture.

They have also learnt a new game called ‘Land, Snow and Sea’. The team have been calling out the different names and the children have had to listen and remember where the different areas are.

This month, the children have been exploring the small world toys, and the dinosaurs have been a firm favourite! To extend on this, the team created an environment for the dinosaurs to live in. The children collected bark and stones, and we used cornflakes for the ground, just to give it a more enhanced ‘prehistoric look’! To extend their interest even further, the children made dinosaur treasure maps, using teabags and water, which aided them in getting a colouring of an ancient map. The children then hid the dinosaurs around the room and used their maps to locate them.

The children have enjoyed looking at the train books and talking about transport in February, so together, the children made a junk model train. They drew themselves and placed them on the train. They have also explored a junk model rocket and decided to make space helmets and dress up like astronauts. They sang zoom zoom, zoom, were going to the moon” so beautifully

In Preschool 2 this month, the children have explored Chinese New Year. They’ve made Chinese fans and attempted to write letters, numbers or meanings in Chinese on them. We have also been talking about what Chinese New year is and what it means to people.

The children have been looking at books on space, so we extended their interest and encouraged them to make their own rocket. Together as a group, they created a large junk model rocket and worked together well in achieving this. The children then pretended that they flew to the moon and this was where they sat and had their snack; a ‘picnic on the moon’ they called it!

We have also been busy teaching the children facts about the planets and the planets themselves. They have then created their own planets to go on our display board. The children have also been working hard to copy some of the letters of the planet names. It has been lovely hearing all the information that they were able to remember when recalling it to parents/carers picking them up at the end of the day.

In the garden, the children have enjoyed making soup and other foods in the mud kitchen. They pretended that the food was for the aliens that had landed from their space rocket. In the tuff tray, the children have been exploring different types of wheels with paper and paint, and the children have enjoyed learning about colour mixing.

We have also been teaching the children about shapes and they have been drawing around the shapes and identifying them. This then extended to finding shapes within the preschool environment.

What’s coming up in March

World Book Day is on Thursday 4th March so we would love to see the children dressed up as a character from their favourite book on that day. The adults will be joining in too!!!

We will be celebrating St Patrick’s Day on Wednesday 17th March. We invite your child to come dressed in green clothes on this day. We will be doing lots of Irish themed activities!

The children will also be making their Mother’s Day cards or cards for special people, so watch out for these beautiful creations that will be coming home.
