It has been a pretty busy year all round for The Old Station Nursery, but December has seen an even more hectic time than usual. In between the nativity plays, carol concerts and Christmas parties, we have been busy growing our own family! A couple of weeks ago we exchanged contracts to acquire a nursery in Henley on Thames in the New Year, so that has kept at least the Head Office team pretty well occupied. The nursery is currently trading as Orchard Farm Day Nursery, on a lovely rural site just outside Henley town centre. It’s a really great site and we are all really pleased that the staff, children and parents will be joining our group in January.
One of the many attractions of this new site is the ability for us to open a Forest School on site; we have a large area of woodland which we can access from the nursery grounds, so we will be able to offer some great opportunities for the nursery children and also involve older children from holiday club. For more information on Forest Schools, do have a look at www.forestschools.com or have a look at the website for local pre-school http://www.longwittenhampreschool.co.uk/forest-school, who have also produced a great leaflet for parents which you can download from their website. I attended a course over 8 years ago up at Wittenham Clumps, where we learnt about how to engage children in outdoor play in a natural setting, including making ‘forest pizzas’ (using clay bases on paper plates and collecting ‘toppings’ from the woodland floor) and collecting different coloured items from the forest to match to paper shapes and form the basis for discussion. We hope that our other settings in Oxfordshire will also be able to access the Forest School, so it looks like 2013 will be just as busy as 2012!
Can I take this opportunity to wish you and your families a very Happy Christmas? Enjoy some very special time together and we look forward to seeing you all in the New Year.
